LOL! I tried and tried...:) For sure their behavior is based on both instinct and learning Bee didn't learn it from another roo, he was just going on instinct. He was born and raised here and had no competition so it worked well for him so he stuck with it. But, if their ability to adjust to...

My head roo is a dancer, the girls love him :) He will even get in the nest boxes, in a cozy corner, under a bush, and coo and beep and squat down and tread a little nest and try to get a hen to come lay an egg. He is quite the charmer! He even tries it with me :) All of the roosters I have...

I also think that it's not for no reason the state has stepped up it's poultry monitoring programs. With so many people keeping chickens now and an increase in birds being brought into the state, there is bound to be an increase in pathogens as well. It cant hurt to be a little bit of a germaphobe!

You have my respect as well. It sounds like you have really thought it through and are making an informed and responsible decision. Hugs to you for having to let go. I had a terrible scare early this spring, and for several miserable days and sleepless nights I contemplated the very same...

So sorry :( I worried constantly about my ducklings, they are up all night wandering around. I have been keeping the window open at night thinking I will hear them if something goes after them. My two year old Pekins are night owls too, I think they are one of the reasons we haven't had much...

Around here people get feed in bulk from Aroostook Milling Co. They sell a wonderful 20% mix of cornmeal oats and barley. When we were getting it I fed it to both the chickens and pigs and they did great on it. You can get it delivered in the forklift size bags.We bought it in 50lb bags from...

Oh, and hers are very healthy and vigerous, my daughter called to tell me they were catching bugs in the garden and putting them in the brooder and the chicks were tearing right into them and just going crazy! Mum was impressed with how healthy they seemed.

Hi Everyone! My mom ordered some chicks through TSC, it was a real mess, but long story short as far as we know one shipment went to her house yesterday, and TSC called her and said that her chicks came in to the waterville post office today but they have not gone to pick them up yet. My mother...

G Grace, it's not Fowl Pox. I am positive. Been there recently, but it's a long story. BTW there hasn't been a case in Maine in over 30 years and that was an isolated incident at Decoster. Prior to that it was like the 50's. Not pox, really. It is just from fighting. I have two that look...

Welcome to all the new Mainer's! I have 20 dozen eggs in my fridge! We cant eat them fast enough, or sell them fast enough. I was thinking of pickling them, does anyone have a particularly good recipe? On another note, does anyone have Ancona ducks up this way? I would like a couple...

I have Ameraucunas, Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers, and most of the eggshells are blue inside. I have a couple olive eggers that lay green egg with brown spots, and the inside of the eggshell is blue ;) It's like something from Dr.Seuss! I would find out what hatchery they order through because...
