Check for parasites first. If the area is red this is another give away. They may have had crusty/poo crusted feathers which irritated them and now they are bare. Treat with Ivermectin and maybe give them a little blukote till it grows back in.

IDK why it makes me so angry when there is an issue with a hatch but it does. I had some eggs under a friend's broody bird and one chick died and I have another one in my shirt because its still got a slightly open umbilical and then there were four more eggs left in there to get cold. My...

Usery also warns about what can be transmitted to your birds this way so read some of his updated articles too. I had thought a lot about a 'chum bucket' as I was calling it and decided against it. Rats: I read an article recently about rats written by a veterinarian and poultry keeper. She...

I am pretty fast at the plucking and processing of a chicken. THEY are easy. Not a duck. Nope. Chicken girl987 I have ducks but not for long. I plan to keep two pets for now because they lay such lovely, delicious blue eggs but all the rest are going. I like ducks, the kids like ducks and...

Sorry... busy here. There are three 'mutts,' but one is a Java Am cross. Love those. It should express mottling but with my luck it will be be a cockerel. They are going to stay in the barn with their momma and the rest of the flock. They have the warmest corner to live in for now and they...

New chicks today. I had a broody determined to sit a few so I let her and voila, three chicks. I don't need them at ALL but they sure do make it easier to smile in the morning, esp when they are fat and healthy.

Molting is slow business here for some. I think its funniest when they walk around without tail primaries. The turn in weather has me feeling pressured by winter to get things done.... oh man.

Both breeds are considered at risk. There is a woman here who raises Buckeyes, nice woman too. PollyC. If you come to the Windsor show on Oct 5 you might find someone else with Doms there. Geese.... they are too smart. They find a way over, under, through and now around fences. I have...

I found freezing them awful. A few others who did it with me also felt they were rather frost bitten etc. I now use the old method of oiling the eggs. Clean, fresh out of the house, I mineral oil the outside and store them in the frig that way. I don't have a pantry/larder that I would think...

Great Points Widget and Jazor. I like logic but I also really like common sense and both are too few. Humans, dogs, cats and chickens and then horses have all lived together a very very long time. I think its probably more healthy for people to have roosters and hear them. From a...

I still have a female or two you can take. Free. I am butchering all the boys. I have to say something that will probably be too blunt for most of you but here goes anyway: chickens evolved a long time ago to be what they are and we messed with it some along the way. Dogs bark, cows moo...

Bucka, if you don't have easy rabbit or dog crates then try separating with tar paper stapled up.

Yes they can but they are very acerbic. The kids eat them sometimes but I will warn you the birds are often first to get them even when I am watching. A net like you use for blueberries might help. Elderberries are local and there are a couple varieties but there are also two 'types', one...

Where are you getting your Elderberry? Which variety? I only have one here. I have a Beach Pea though :)

Oh my gosh what an amazing thing to see Bucka! And peaking in that window your house looks pretty interesting inside with all those beams. Yes, losing Polish was certainly... a loss. I know what you mean tamma about them talking and being handled easily. My girls also loved carrying her...

Carlos, Priority EXPRESS is 2 days or less not priority. Just in case you have to go through that again. Tammaclean, I have very bad news on our bird front. The Polish Cap bantam hen who mothered your birds and was shown with good results by my daughter was stolen. She is gone by person or...

Busy clearly LG. I want to mention too that EE do not have to have pea combs. There is no standard at all because they are not a breed it just means they lay a blue egg. This can happen when cross any blue egg trait carrying bird over another to produce bluish or even teal eggs. The Legbar...

Why do birds insist on trying to go broody this late in the year? Its not the geese, so I can't call them silly goose. Its the Muscovies and chickens. I have one Marans who has tried twice in the last month or so. She already raised some so you'd think she'd want a break.
