Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

Hooked up the chicken door inside the coop to run box using hinges and a metal wire to pull it open. Then drilled a hole on top of the box to insert a metal rod to stop the chicken coop door from being preyed open if something got inside the run. Still have to extend the HC apron on the ground...

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

Inching closer and closer to being done with the run. Ending up using some extra vinyl fencing on the backside of the run to deter critters coming from the woods and put 1x2 fencing on top. Just have to finish off the perimeter with HC and pen them down. And I went with re-bar ties to connect...

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

Well, they found the poop board with the roost and two of the girls like to sleep ON the poop board itself, right next to the door we can walk in. Gonna have to build a secondary dutch screen door so they don't fly/hop out into the yard and still keep my deep liter inside.

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

Done with the coop and it’s painting. As you can see the chicks found a higher spot than the simple roost I built for them. 😕 Somehow they fit into that little area and could not fly up to the roost bar with the poop board. <sigh>. Happy chickens , happy wife.

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

Got the coop exterior painted, HC screwed in and the overlapped it with wood scraps, made the poop board (found some tiles for the time being), created a temp roosting bar for the chicks, and moved the girls in. I will post final pictures of the coop after I get the trim painted. Then off to...

Thanks! It's amazing what you can build with wood glue, bubble gum, and duct tape. :)

Got the patio paint down If decide to go vinyl, will just clean it out and put some in later , but I don’t expect to. Now to find a sheet of vinyl for the poop board; that’s important to me

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

Bad picture but primed and sealed it late in the evening so I could get it ready for painting this weekend. Primed the inside floor and about 16” up the walls as I am going to use a patio paint instead of vinyl rolled flooring , as I had paint in hand. Question I have is, do I even need to...

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

If anyone ever says building a coop is easy, they need to be smacked. The picture doesn’t show I but I have cut the window and chicken door out along with glueing the 2x4s to the plywood. Just waiting for it to dry

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

That's the truth. My wife and I definitely didn't expect all this expense. My AKC Australian Shepherd puppy, crate, and supplies is going to be less expensive than these chickens and their housing.

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

Thank you. I was thinking about using some left over chain-link fencing that I have to use as a canopy fence cover OR using the 1"x 2" welded fencing I have to do the job. We already have a tarp over the enclosure which we will use to provide shade. What do you think about using 1" holed...

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

No they will not get to free range, as my Australian Shepherd puppies would try to herd them and end up killing them. I've been told this by the breeder; risky to do. I am now considering putting the coop outside the kennel and just building a 16" hardware cloth tunnel to the kennel itself do...

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

Yes, those were my concerns. The chicken wire I was going to use for above protection on top of the kennel and work it around the pitch of the roof along with a tarp. Also as a ground guard to protect from predators, but I'm guessing that isn't a good idea. I have a few rolls of 1"x 2" , 14...

Building a 4x8 Coop inside 10x10 dog kennel

I am looking to build TimM's medium sized Coop design for our 8 Leghorn pullet chicks (yeah it was 6 when I signed up last week, then 1 died, and wife said we need at least 3 from the same nest to prevent the 1 week chicks from possibly killing the single newbie. I think she just wanted more)...
