I am raising chicken not to sell either. The cost/time to raise a block for either breed is about the same. I think the Free Ranger took me 4.5-5 months to have decent meat on them. Can you share your feed that make excellent flavor?
True, any home raise chicken is better than store Cornish X. However, there are difference in taste from various breed of chicken. My favorite would be Dorking and White Bresse. The feed is also affect the taste.
For those that not picky on taste, Ranger is way go. I am taking different route. Hopefully, my creation of Bresworth (Irworth x Bresse cross) project fruiten in the next few years.

If you like Dorking taste, you would love White American Bresse. It is very similar in taste. I used to raise Dorking, but hard to find new bloodline. They are growth pretty slow and not a lot of meat at 6 months. I also don't recommend beer making barley feed in the last 2 weeks. It ruin...
The White American Bresse taste much better than other dual purpose breed. My favorite breed would be White American Bresse and Dorking. I don't give them any special feed or milk. If you able to get the breed, give it a try. If you have any questions, checkout the Bresse Thread.
I have a Red Ranger pair a few years ago. The rooster died around 5 months the hen live until 2.5 years. She was doing very well and big. I have to butch her because the rooster and hens in the block no longer like her. They chase her round for no reason. They eat less than CornishX so do...
