I (unknowingly) bought sick chicks. Maybe this will help someone else.

Well, when I told her I had the pullets in quarantine she told me it wasn't necessary since they had never "had boots on the ground", whatever that means. So who knows what she does. I asked her a lot of questions before I bought the pullets, but I feel like maybe she knew what to say to get me...

Thank you @Folly's place. The sad thing is that in my area she is actually pretty well known and considered to be a knowledgeable breeder and hatchery. She is selling breeding stock and chicks to LOTS of people. Even if she didn't know about the MS, there's no reason for her to get so ugly about...

Unfortunately I think that may be the case. The rep that called me from the ag dept. asked for her info and I gave it to him. I don't want to make trouble for anyone, but she was so hostile I felt like I needed to give him the info so that maybe she won't do this to others, knowingly or unknowingly.

Thanks @aart, it is good to have answers and resources. Clears the static so to speak. I tried to share the lab report and vet notes with the NPIP farm, but the lady got really upset and said I was the only person who ever bought birds from her that has had a problem. She said she doesn't have...

For anyone who is interested, I got the test results back today. The sick pullet has Mycoplasma synoviae. Here in NC, mycoplasma is a "reportable" disease, so my results were sent to the NCDA&CS (department of agriculture) poultry health rep for my part of the state. He gave me a call this...

I don't know the answer to this, but in my state NPIP did not matter in his situation. In NC, NPIP testing is only done for AI and pullorum in non-commercial flocks. Only hatcheries and commercial flocks can be MG/MS certified clean. Edit: this is what my state poultry rep told me about NPIP in...

Thank you @Tre3hugger! I'm watching my handsome Speckled Sussex cockerel as I write this. And I held my baby daughter a lot today, which always makes me feel better.

Thanks so much @HeatherKellyB. If my experience stops one person from dealing with a mess like this, or saves anyone half the stress and heartache, it makes me feel better.

Thanks. I don't feel like it. I wish there was more I could do. At this point I'm mostly going on what the state pathologist says.

My poultry vet sent tracheal swabs from the quarantined pullet with respiratory symptoms to the state lab. They will perform PCR testing for two types of mycoplasma, and for ILT. The assumption (of the vets) is that the other pullets are asymptomatic carriers of whatever the sick on has. My...

The seller is on the NPIP list if you check the website, but it looks like she did not get the mycoplasma testing...is it optional in some states or something? I guess I thought that there would still be a risk, but that going through someone who took the trouble to be NPIP would reduce that risk.

Thank you for the solidarity @Mrs. K and @TheMother I am so hoping I didn't infect the rest of my flock. I really did try to quarantine, which is why was so upset when the vet said it likely failed. I am on pins and needles waiting for the test results from the state lab.

Thanks for your reply @Pghelp, this sounds pretty similar to what I did and am still doing with the new pullets. So maybe it worked, but if it didn't I guess I did the best I could.

Thank you so much @Pghelp. I appreciate your post so much. What do you normally do for quarantine? I feel like I read a lot of articles but still got it wrong 😢

@Studabird thank you so much for your kind words. I want to break stuff...and I've definitely walked. The not knowing is the worst. I'm so sorry you've lost your whole flock before. That's awful. I lost 3 of my original 4 girls between Christmas and Memorial Day (hawk, unknown cause, and cancer)...

About two weeks ago I purchased 4, 6 week old chicks from a NPIP farm near my home. The woman was nice, seemed knowledgeable and responsible. The chicks appeared healthy and I quarantined them in my garage. Long story short, $200 later I have 4 chicks with severe coccidiosis that I am treating...
