Thanks for explaining. I would have thought a slow growing staph in poultry feet with antibiotic cream squeezed into the cavity would be different to say a deep flesh wound in a human leg post surgery, for example? But anyway, I am no expert, I just use my limited knowledge and try and apply it...
I don't want to confuse the OP, but I was advised to change only every 3 days assuming the wound and dressing are nicely wrapped and kept clean. That's why I cover the vetwrap with a duct tape boot.
If I couldn't keep it clean then I'd do it daily.
What is your thinking behind a daily clean...
Morning from sunny England!
Did this happen just now as you were posting or at some time before?
Chicken pus isn't yellow and oozy like human pus. It sets hard. Sometimes it is difficult to find inside the bumblefoot because it sticks to the tissues around it. Hence needing to dig around...
I had to check back quickly and I see you are now in good hands. Thanks @ryneaeiel for stepping in.
As I said, better to do it properly with all the right stuff.
I'll come back tomorrow and see how you are doing @i want a sillkie !
no idea what the cast is.
If I were you, I'd work on getting all the right stuff in place before you start. Maybe do it tomorrow once more expert people have replied to this thread.
You need to post pics so we can see how big it is and where located.
You may not need to cut if you can just pick off the scab once it is soaked.
If you need a blade then a sharp scalpel is ideal. If not then a box cutter/Stanley knife at a pinch.
I see you are young? Well done for tackling this. Hopefully your mother will help hands on, or someone else. It's easier with two people. They can hand you things and keep the bird happy while you do the business!
Hope it all goes well. Don't worry about a bit of bleeding. That will happen.
Make sure everything is clean. Ideally boil your tweezers and blade or hold under a flame or at the least spray them with the vetrycin. Different ways to sterilise.
Honestly the wrapping in a towel will make it so much easier to calm the bird and keep them still, and their wings from...
Excellent guide here https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/bumblefoot-surgery-with-pics-and-how-to.236649/
I went on YouTube to find something for you and quite honestly there are some horrific examples there that I just couldn't recommend.
It might be an idea to post pics of the foot here in case that helps people give better more specific advice. Eg whether it is on the top of the foot or underneath, how big it is etc
Yes I checked. Neosporin is triple antibiotic cream. So long as there is NO -caines in it, it is perfect.
if you have no epsom salts then scrub the foot with warm water and ordinary soap.
ok that's a start. I have no idea about the herbal skin spray or the cast. Is the cast the stuff they use in hospital when you've broken a bone and it sets hard? If so you don't need that. I can't imagine the herbal spray is any use.
You need antibiotic cream really. At least antiseptic cream...
