I would also have to go double-check at night, even with an auto door. I'd always worry that someone got locked out. Automatic in the morning has its attractions, though!

I leave mine open into their secure pen. It's not an automatic door, so this saves me having to rush out in the morning to let them out of the coop. Will probably shut it in cold weather, once I have a coop large enough that they won't kill each other if they wake up before I do!
