That's a little tight, especially if you have larger breeds. If you can get it out to a foot the mess will probably land in the bedding. :)

How far are your roosts from the walls? Some hens are unusually talented, but usually if the roost is a foot from the wall they can't hit it.

I frequently mention "locally available materials", this is a great use of "situationally available materials".
