This thread was new to me so I am putting it here. I wanted to know how the Columbine hybrid was developed and this thread shows how it and many others are created.
Breeders are going to keep selection a priority if they are good breeders. But hatcheries would not put those concerns at the top of the list. They have thousands of customers who all want their birds now. The avoidance of production bottlenecks and the logistical nightmares of getting the...
Selection is the essential part of breeding, along with culling for sure. I was also under the impression that problems are also due to just how many birds are reproduced from the foundation stock. Each successive generation increasing the incidence of defects.
That’s exactly what I would be doing. Cover the costs of obtaining my own POL flock. I can easily get $25 CDN a bird so if they live and sell easily the costs will be covered.
In this area the ISA brown red sex link dominates the market. So the ISA brown is the hybrid I have raised. They are impressive birds. I am keeping my hens in tractors during the summer and the ISA have been champs. I have two other hybrid choices available to me . Red Sussex cross and...

Over the last few years I have kept a variety of heirloom and hybrid birds in my small laying flock. I was surprised at the difference in performance and productivity between the hybrids and Buff Orpingtons. I recently bought a couple Cream Legbar hens. They lay beautiful blue eggs about 1...
The above is one example of a small farm in the UK doing as I described above. I found several other farms doing similar things. All these birds are being sold to backyard chicken keepers as POL pullets.

This is a pro hybrid thread. If you think hybrids are the spawn of Satan kindly move along please. Hybrids cannot help but be the best because they combine at least two superior characteristics of at least two heirloom parents. I findit very interesting to observe how hybrids are being...
