Same here, until I found a guy who makes cabinets and has lots of wood shavings that he just bags up and leaves out for people to take. It’s a mix of hardwood shavings, mostly alder, and works just dandy.
I beg to differ, I like the smell of cedar. (I like the smell of pine too, for what it’s worth.) Because of the ability to repel moths, I think it could be helpful in repelling chicken pests like mites or lice. But then, the biology of a mite is very different from a moth, just like the biology...
I love this idea! You don’t have to grow all your own food to be “self sufficient” in my eyes, though kudos to those that are able. Even if you’re growing a few plants on a balcony, that’s far better and healthier than most anything you could find in a food desert.
This was the kind of lady who was perfectly happy thinking that her meat just magically appeared on styrofoam trays in the grocery store, pretty sad to have people so removed from their food.
No, the lady offering the eggs was the wife of our congregation’s leader, whom the lady who was having...
I watched a neighbor offer some eggs from her chickens to another neighbor who had fallen on some hard times financially. It was a generous offer but the lady being offered the eggs was super awkward and said she would rather buy eggs from the store. I was flabbergasted.
Rumor/myth: cedar shavings are toxic to chickens, only use pine shavings.
I don’t know if this is true or not, but I kept hearing it repeated on dozens of the ‘how to take care of chickens’ I read when I was first getting into chickens. I’ve never seen anything that seems to substantiate it...
Myth: Feeding your chickens hot oatmeal in the morning is a great breakfast for them, especially in the winter.
Fact: all oats contain beta glucans, an anti nutritive factor. While some oats aren’t bad, they should be used in moderation. What I’ve read generally recommends between 30-40% of...
Wow, I didn’t know that! That’s cool! I wonder how hatching would go for these chicks? Does one do all the pipping/zipping? Is there a higher mortality rate with the chicks - because one is (probably) further away from the air sac?
