1" is a bit small. I'd shoot more for 1.5-2.0". Round or rounded corners. Something with texture that doesn't conduct heat/cold: wood works best IMO. Ripped and rounded over 2x4s and natural branches work well.
Aiming for 12" per bird is a good idea.
