HELP! Broody has stolen an extra 9 eggs 😩

Since you did order an incubator, you could put the eggs in there if you want to give them longer but not keep the hen on the nest.

HELP! Broody has stolen an extra 9 eggs 😩

If you're worried about accidentally killing chicks, wait until you're ready to throw eggs out anyway. If you're worried about smell, do it outside. But if they were going to really stink, you would be smelling something just as you handle the eggs. So I don't think they will be too smelly...

HELP! Broody has stolen an extra 9 eggs 😩

For any eggs that look infertile, you could break them open and check. (I had a whole clutch of infertile ones once, and opening each egg was reassuring: yes, I really was correct, these were NOT developing.)

HELP! Broody has stolen an extra 9 eggs 😩

@Kiki @LadiesAndJane Can you tell if that egg has a developing embryo or not? (No idea what day of incubation, because the hen was adding eggs for a while before OP realized and marked them.) @Nicky S I can see something in it-- I'm just not sure if it's a chick or a yolk. Do you see any...

HELP! Broody has stolen an extra 9 eggs 😩

Yes, the light area is air sac. It gets bigger over time, whether the egg develops or not. The dark area is everything else-- white, yolk, and (maybe) chick. Try candling the egg somewhere very dark (like inside a windowless room, with the lights off and the door closed.)...

HELP! Broody has stolen an extra 9 eggs 😩

That sounds good! If you can put food & water in the Eglu with her, she and the chicks might be fine there for the first few days. I'm not sure about chicks and ladders-- sometimes chicks do really surprising things, and sometimes they stand there and peep helplessly, or run the wrong way. If...

HELP! Broody has stolen an extra 9 eggs 😩

Sorry, I can't tell in the photos. If the hen is having trouble keeping all the eggs under her, you could take away the early/infertile eggs, and leave the rest until your incubator arrives. Then once you have the incubator there and tested, you can leave the late ones with the hen, and put the...

HELP! Broody has stolen an extra 9 eggs 😩

I sometimes take half the eggs into the house to candle in a dark room, then swap so I can candle the other half of the eggs. The hen stays happier because she still has some eggs, I have less eggs to handle at a time, and I can do it in the daytime. (I do not like trying to candle at night when...

HELP! Broody has stolen an extra 9 eggs 😩

That could work. If the eggs are all safely underneath her, that might be the easiest way to do it. Or you could candle them all, remove any that are NOT developing, and leave her with the rest (at least until the first ones hatch.) Disaster? No. You can estimate their age when you candle...
