I didn't love gore but tactical maneuvers, sacrafice, heroism espionage and strange facts. I think 13 year olds like stuff like that because most are sheltered from stuff like that until then and disgust and horror are new emotions and emotions can be addicting.
Most of history is gritty but needed. I don't think kids should be sheltered (to a degree) from death but cannibalism might be a bit much. Of course I was the 13 year old thst read War books instead of horse stories....so I'm a bit warped.
