Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Thank you! I really appreciate this info. It gives me a point of reference.

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Good morning! Our coop is in a barn which is some 100 or so yards from our house (would have to measure …). We just finished renovating and reinforcing the run so it is pretty secure. I’m not sure where I would put the feeder at night. I could put it in a galvanized bin in the barn, but that is...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Hi there! I am also planning on feeding my chicks fermented feed. A couple of questions for you. Can I give it to them as a “supplement” to their regular feed (and when they are still little as a supplement to their regular crumbles)? How much do you give them each day? Can I start giving them...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

I think that’s going to be the plan! I’m going to start off with a simple arrangement (hanging feeder in run overnight) and then see what happens. The run is very secure (and will have poultry netting surrounding it). So we shall see … thanks!

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Ha! And vice-versa! Where are you? Did you say you just recently got chicks? Mine are coming next week …

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Hi there! I’ve gotten many answers (and, as I, too, am learning, the ultimate answer needs to work for me …). Keeping food in coop can attract rodents - and I would like to avoid that. Folks have also said unless weather conditions dictate, food should be in the run because chickens sleep in the...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

When you say you remove all feed at night does that include food in the run?

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Due to severe paranoia, I have both. 😅 Still, your explanation regarding the granite barrier makes sense, so I’ll just think of another use for these huge beautiful granite stones. No need to tempt nastiness!

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

I was referring to the cinder box placement of @Liz Birdlover It sounds like that may be different than my design since she has multiple layers of other things below the cinder blocks. In prior posts I was asking about putting granite stones on top of a horizontal apron … and you remarked that...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

@3KillerBs I think I still hear mulch, correct?

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

That’s a beautiful coop and run! Does your run have a hardware cloth apron?

Thanks so much. That seems to be the verdict.

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Not that we have a ton of bear, but … interestingly, I think the raccoons, fishers and minks are giving me the most worry!

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

We live against woods which are home to many predators. A few weeks ago, a bear destroyed our bird feeders as we forgot to take them down post hibernation season … 😩 I guess I’m wondering whether there is a safe place for overnighting feed. We don’t have a garage. Perhaps a galvanized bin in...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

    Doesn’t that attract other predators?

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Ha. I’m going to stick with the lock and a cotton baseball cap. 😜

That’s a beautiful coop! I am probably going to put at least two 🤣
