Where feeder should be - pros and cons

If you can't find the attachments, this thread is a good tutorial on how to make them with pvc elbows. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/make-your-own-no-waste-5-gallon-25-feed-bucket-feeder-for-about-3.834227/#post-12233274

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

For what it is worth, my daughter has kept her horse feed in heavy duty plastic trash cans with tightly secured lids for the past year and a half. The trash cans are in a large hay shed without a door. So far, neither rats, mice, or raccoons have gotten into the cans. We would probably secure...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

I just thought of one additional consideration that I don't believe has been brought up- how close is your coop to your house? My coop is within 50 feet of my house, so I really don't want to attract rodents with food in the run overnight. If your coop is much farther away, attracting mice...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Hi :) I have 14 chickens and use 2 five gallon bucket feeders and one Harris Farm hanging feeder. Both styles have minimal food waste. The chickens prefer the Harris Farm feeder, but it needs protection from the rain so we use the bucket feeders in the less covered side of the run.

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

I'm not even sure when dealing with bear. As I'm sure you know, they can get into almost anything. We are very fortunate that while the Great Dismal Swamp just west of us has one of the largest concentrations of black bear on the east coast, the closest bear sighting to us has been about 5 miles...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Not that we have seen. Our house is about 40 feet from the coop and we also have a trail cam set up. As far as we can tell, we rarely have night time predators - we have never caught anything on camera and have only seen a racoon print once in some mud near the coop. If you live in an area...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Nope, for the most part, my chickens sleep very soundly at night. Chickens have almost no night vision, so even if something wakes them up, they don't leave the roost until it is light enough for them to see.

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

Great idea! We have 2 of the same type of feeder, but on blocks. Yesterday I went out to the run about 15 minutes after all chickens went to bed and caught a mouse trying to get into the feeder😒 Normally I am outside just before they go into the coop for the night and start taking the feeders...

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

That's what we use. My neighbor has lost many chickens to raccoons, so we weren't taking any chances with the doors;)

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

No automatic coop door and yes, we get up with the sun to feed the chickens and horses:cool:

Where feeder should be - pros and cons

We keep our feeders in the run. The only time I have put a feeder in the coop is during weather so severe that the chickens don't leave the coop. Our run is predator proof, so we don't worry about them. To keep mice out of the food, we remove our feeders at night and store them in a large...
