First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

They aren't "run-from-me" shy, but only a couple of them allow gentle handling. None of them are sit-in-my-lap friendly, but that's okay. All except Big Red will eat from my hand. He's a little nervous about being "that" close, though he will eat from a dish at my feet.

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Here are the others of my small flock. There's the rooster, Big Red, who is a Cream Legbar and Rhode Island Red cross, the two Cream Legbars (Elsa and Bluey), and Bandit, who is also a Rhode Island Red and Cream Legbar cross. Finally, there's Elmo, who is a straight Rhode Island Red. Shown in...

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Update! Three of the pullets are laying consistently (and have been doing so for a few weeks). The two Cream Legbars are lagging, but I still have hope. I've added a light to the run and inside the coop that is on a timer. I'm providing the "flock" with over 12 hours of light. I have the...

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Day 4 and they all went in, including the cockerel, "Big Red", that I decided to keep. I moved him down to the chicken tractor first thing this morning. He wisely followed the pullets into the coop tonight when it was getting dark. They are not very early to bed, though. It was close to full...

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Friday night and Saturday night the chicks required some help getting back into the coop. Saturday night it may have been my fault. All the chicks but two were in the coop, so I went down to see what was going on and EVERYONE came back out. I left, and apparently everyone decided to stay...

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Today was the first day some of my chicks got to see the outside world. Seven of the pullet chicks were in the mobile coop and run. I put them in the coop portion a couple of weeks ago and opened the outside door for the first time today. I'll give a couple of the pullets away as they age--...

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Any comments on the sex of this chick? Six weeks old now, it's the one I'm least certain about cockerel/pullet. Here's a link to the post: Pullet or Cockerel, & why?

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Four weeks plus a couple days in. I didn't take pictures today when changing the litter in the brooder, but definitely 6 cockerels for sure. Of the nine remaining, I'm only absolutely certain about two of the Cream Legbars. The other crosses/Rhode Island Red pullets are a little hard to tell...

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Based solely on the prominence of developing combs, I'd guess that I have at least 5 cockerels. The first five I've shown are my guess at cockerel. I know it's only three weeks, but does anyone have any guesses on sex? There are three Cream Legbar chicks that I'm pretty certain are pullets...

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Photos today as I was cleaning the brooder. Individual shots of everyone at day 25 after hatching. There are a few that are obviously cockerels, since their comb is already developing. There are some others that seem to be less obvious, but it is early. [when loading the pictures, it looks...

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

I can tell selected ones but don't have ID on all 15... I'm a bad farmer. I don't want to get too attached to all of them, since I'm only keeping (at most) five. I think the one that I've already ID'd as a cockerel may go back to the farm where I got them. They said their RIR rooster is...

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

This is a photo of "Fluffy Flufferton" who has a pronounced tail already. I've posted a new thread about tail or not and sex. Hopefully it is a she, so I can keep her for eggs. Otherwise, another chick will have to assume the identity that was given by my almost-4-year old granddaughter. :)

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

No time for small group or individual photos today. I did get a group shot while I cleaned the brooder. My wife, who hasn't seen them for a couple of days, is surprised by the growth rate. I didn't think they'd grown that much since Saturday, though feathers continue to develop.

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

Took this photo today, at 15 days old. This appears to be my first identifiable cockerel. He definitely has a more pronounced comb developing already. He's from the group that appears to be pure Rhode Island Red.

First hatch with 15 Mixed Chicks

I'm just over two weeks after hatch with 15 chicks. They are barnyard mix, but believed to be Rhode Island Red, Cream Legbars, and the crosses of both. There are roosters and hens of both breeds. There are three chicks that are pretty certainly pure Cream Legbar, since they came from blue...
