I'm sorry. I had it happen once on accident with a couple quail eggs, I felt awful. It wasn't even shut all the way, but it was enough to kill them.- MGG

Was the air vent open all the way? Suffocation sounds like the most likely issue. It can unfortunately get bumped shut very easily.- MGG
