I would keep her hydrated, electrolytes and and carry on with the calcium if she is trying to lay an egg, this will help her contract, as advice already given. Did you use the sling to keep her prolapse in? I am really interested because I don’t see how she could poop with a sling that keeps her...
If you are absolutely confident, I would keep cleaning, keep the prolapse moist and keep trying to gently push it back in. Can you get hold of vetrycin, I swear by that, I use it on my horses, dogs and chickens, I even use it to clean my bulldogs ears and eyes.
I don’t think culling is needed at this point. But it will take a lot of TLC to get your hen through this If you are confident there is no broken egg or blockage 🙏
I honestly wouldn’t be confident enough to advise maybe @Eggcessive or @azygous could. I wouldn’t want to give you wrong advice. In my opinion, something caused that prolapse. If she had laid an egg on the same day she had the prolapse , that could be the cause (you mentioned she had laid eggs...
And this is the thing, I was hesitant to advise you to give calcium, I didn’t know if that would make the prolapse worse until one of our more experienced members advised it. If you have never been through anything like this before, it is really scary knowing what to do for the best! I feel...
I’m my opinion, if it is never clean long enough to take a picture, she has to be backed up, there is definitely a blockage or some kind of obstruction. If a vet is not an option, I would keep going with the advice already given, calcium, hydration, electrolytes, keeping the prolapse clean and...
Is taking her to a vet an option, to get her checked over? Without clear pictures, and the little bit of information we have, it is hard to help, it could be a number of things. How is she looking/acting now?
This is true. If I ever need to give an Epsom salt bath, I blow dry them on the cool setting so they don’t get a chill, my girls love it. Maybe just clean around her vent area with the Epsom salt water.
It is really hard to know without pictures…. If she has a broken egg inside her she will need antibiotics straight away. Keep giving the calcium which will help expel the egg remains (if it is a broken egg) and keep her hydrated. Also add some sugar to her water. As casportpony said, you would...
Out of curiosity, how does her crop feel? I have just dealt with something similar. My little polish ebony was all hunched up and isolating herself. I brought her in and monitored her. Her crop was mushy, but she also hadn’t pooped for a good few hours. This made me think she had a blockage. I...
That is probably because the other chickens have been pecking at it. Azygous has given you great advice, I was going to suggest a calcium pill but I wasn’t confident enough to, in case her contracting made the prolapse worse. I think if you follow the advice of Azygous, your hen will pull...
Yes, separate her straight away, then clean her, you could give her an Epsom salt bath, which should clean and relax her and then apply the petroleum jelly if that is all you have.
