Well, I have had to move Maude back to her old run. Had nothing to do with her, but she is having to be the companion to my SLW roo who, all of a sudden, has had the snot beat out of him by my 6 month old Silver Lakenvelder cockerel! Lacey, the SLW, needed to be separated because he seems very...
I'm happy to report that Miss Maude is doing very well with the other chickens. I let her out of the tractor after 5 days and I haven't seen her have any problems at all (other than being the boys' favorite girl to mate with. )
Feeding her hasn't been a problem since she is too big and...

I am surprised by how much I grew to like those goofy girls. The dying part is what I dreaded most about having meaties, because I knew they probably wouldn't live to be very old, but what I didn't know about them was how sweet they are. We called them our "feathered dogs" because...
DUH!!!!! I have the solution to this problem already... I'll put Maude in the chicken tractor that is inside the other chickens' run! Why didn't I think of that earlier instead of stressing over this? Maude will be protected from, but surrounded by, other chickens. Plus, there is a big dog...
Sad update this morning... our Ethel has died. I went outside to feed them and found her lying down dead. I noticed what looked like blood stringing from her vent yesterday as she went in the nest box to lay, so I guess I'm not really surprised by this.
Now though, I don't know what to do...
Yep, both my CR girls started laying earlier than any of my regular layers, which really surprised me. The CRs had two brothers that started crowing very young too... the boys had to be re-homed though because they were LOUD. And to answer the dirty rear end question... YES, mine are always...
Both of my CR girls are laying pretty regularly now. Maude laid one yesterday that was so big it looks like it should have come from a turkey! I can't wait to see how many yolks are in that one.
My two girls hatched on St. Patrick's Day, so they are almost 5 months old. They are very big (and sweet... I call them our feathered dogs, lol), but I've had them on a restricted diet since they were 3 weeks old, so they probably aren't as big as they could be.

Nice!! What colour is it? I'm interested to know if other Cornish X lay speckled eggs too! Yay, thats awesome!
Not speckled, it was a very light tan color... and a nice, big double yolker. It looked like there was another one out there today that was shell-less, but I didn't...
One of my CR girls laid an egg! I think it was Maude, who had developed quite a large, red comb over the last few weeks. Shouldn't be long before Ethel starts laying...
At 13 weeks of age one or both of my CR boys started to crow so it was, sadly, time to say goodbye to them. My uncle took them - I don't want to know their fate.
Don't let that pic fool you, he is a big boy! But, I've had my 4 on a restricted diet since they were 3 weeks old, which may be why he doesn't look as plump as your girl does.
Here are mine enjoying a nice dirt bath yesterday evening.
White and dirt don't mix very well.
11 weeks, 3 days old and still going strong...
"What, did you think I'd die or something?"
It's raining a little so I tried to snap a pic of the 4 of them from my door. The girls and Pipsqueak took off when they saw my camera.
My 4 are still doing great. They love to take dust baths in their run. They're still up on their legs and are still able to run (as in towards me when I have food. )
I looked out today and saw one of the girls scratching in the dirt just like any other chicken. I guess since I nearly starve...
My CRs woke up to find some new freedom today... they've inherited the old run from my adult chickens, which gives them a lot more room.
8 weeks old and checking out the new ground.
With my sweet DD (who is in her PJs.)
The way they normally look, head down, EATING.
I won't be able to free range them but once they're big enough to integrate into the adult flock, they'll have a 32' x 12' run to do their chicken thing in. I hope that will be enough room for them to live happy lives.
Yeah, I know they probably won't live very long. I've explained that to my kids and they understand that it's a breed thing and a fact of life for this kind of chicken.
I'm not "too lazy" to butcher them, just too tender hearted. But, the way I look at it... they're going to die somehow and I...
