You have some very stubborn hens, as hens most certainly can be. Are they overcrowded? They need 8-12" of roosting space per bird. Given the height of your coop, I think that is a great idea! I agree you do not want them on the ground. My coop is 8' high so I have a nesting box that is 4 boxes wide and 3 high.
