My run is a similar sq footage but the litter is much, much shallower (like I took off maybe 2" of material during my big clean out in summer), so that makes a huge difference. I couldn't imagine trying to turn 18" of material by hand!
If I worked with more compost or had a bigger run, I'd probably need a bigger toolkit, but I think I've gotten a routine down that works for me at this point. As long as I mind the amount of chips vs leaves and grass, the litter shouldn't compact down enough to become difficult to manage.
I'd...
Climate, soil type, probably a few other factors matter too. For me, strictly grass clipping and leaves would just mat down and cause mud and odor. So I absolutely need wood chips for aeration and drainage to control that, which is why I put in a new layer of chips after my recent cleanout...
How is the drainage at the run location?
I've never tried the pellets so I don't know how well they would work. Hopefully someone who has tried them in a similar set up can explain.
I personally don't like shavings as I find they just absorb water vs wood chips/chunks that let water flow...
As long as they have aeration and drainage they shouldn't mold. With the new chips I put in I should be able to put leaves 3, 4" deep without issue. I can tell when aeration is lacking as that's when you start seeing sliminess in the leaf litter instead of leaves just breaking down and vanishing.
I pick up obvious poops daily but that's because I don't like stepping on them. I have a true deep litter run: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/prepping-deep-litter-for-fall.1599199/ so any poops would compost into the mix, but I choose to compost them on the side instead.
Not sure if...
