Barred, try rosemary, mint or bay leaves (we used real, not dried) for the flies. Vanilla or the citrus fruit is good for the mosquitos :)

Oh, if anyone is having problems with flies, you can try rosemary or catnip, also mint, basil or bay leaves are good. It's better if you have a living plant and grow it near the coops or pens, the dried herbs never worked for us, and just make sure the animals can't get it or they might eat your...

for the vanilla, about 1 tbs per cup of water, but it does depend on how strong the extract is, you can add more if needed. For the orange, you can use lemons too, I just use 1/2 of the fruit squeezed in per cup of water. Good luck!!

OMG!!! I WANT SOME OF THESE SOOOOOOO BAD!!!!

Right now, I have about 25 birds on 2 acres. 1 acre is pasture and the other is where the coop is, but they have pretty much eaten that down and they got into the garden and OBLITERATED my cabbage plants!!! . I can't seem to get them to go into the pasture though, I've tried luring (sp) them out...

How many of you here in La are letting your birds free-range? If you are, what do ya'll have on your property for them to eat? Are you planting particular grass seeds, etc.? I can't seem to grow anything in the Louisiana dirt!! The clay out here is awful, can't even walk on it when it's wet...

Awwww....I've done that...my hubby says I have to resist helping them out b'cuz 'they know what they're doing'...well, they don't always know!!! I've even tossed eggs that I thought were bad, only to have it crack open and be a develping chick! That is heartbreaking, especially with my turkeys...

That happened to us with our first hatch! Out of 28 chicken eggs...only 5 hatched!!! Same scenarios!!! Our broody's were on them...but we also had a snake that was hanging out grabbing some! It even took one that was half way out of the shell!!! I was sooo mad!! We hatched 5 out of 12 turkey...

Have you crossed buffs & leghorns before? How do they come out? Good for meat/eggs or both? We were thinking about getting a leghorn roo to cross with our buffs...just curious if it's a good mix... :)
