No sooner than I post that I expect they will start laying, then they do! I wish it worked that way for everything.

My hens quit laying for the winter. With the days getting longer, I'm thinking that they'll start laying again in February. Does that sound about right?

Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I have about decided to keep the dog. Like Pam said, it's more my fault than his. I should have secured the run a little better. I know that I simply will never be able to trust him around the chickens though.

Well, I had a disaster this weekend. My outside dog got into the chicken run and killed all of my hens. I only had 4 in the run but he got them all, just for sport apparently. He didn't eat any of them. Fortunately, my 2 Icelandic chicks are still in the brooder inside. He's a good watch...

I'm moving to an all Icelandic flock but so far I have 2 buff Orpingtons, 1 barred Plymouth Rock, 1 production red (all hens) and two Icelandic chicks, too young to tell the sex.

Well, out of the 12 eggs that I received in the mail, 2 of them hatched yesterday. I was a little concerned by one of the chicks. She seemed to be weaker and more unsteady than the other one but both were doing fine this morning.

Good luck Cajun. As a new chicken owner, this is a very strong reminder to protect my flock and to quarantine new birds.
