I have been growing out 3 heritage RIR cockerels to see which one I want to keep for spring breeding. One of them has been stubborn and wanting to roost outside the "fortress" as I call it. It's basically a bulletproof coop inside of a fenced run protected by electric fence. Well, this morning I...
Hey Y'all. I haven't been on in a while. How's everyone doing? Hope y'all had a good christmas! Have y'all seen the weather forecast for next week? Looks like we are getting in the low 20's for 4 or 5 nights in a row. I know they will probably be fine just wondering what everyone else is doing...
It's not that big of a deal. The state vet did test every one of my birds (30 or so) when I got my NPIP cert a couple of years ago. Took an hour or so. They test for AI
Not sure if it's fowl pox the pic is a little blurry. If you can, I would isolate her from the rest of the birds for a while to see if she starts showing any other symptoms like being lethargic, not eating or drinking much. Better to be safe than sorry because it can spread in a hurry.
Country, I did some google searching and from what I can see there is no real ordinance or law regarding keeping chickens. The only thing I saw was about not letting animals run loose and keeping them confined. That was in St. Martin parish, not the city of St. Martinville. Dmontgomery is...
I ended up not getting as many as I wanted. 14 went into lockdown and 11 hatched. I need as many as possible to select for breeding. Sorry. Hopefully next spring I can get you all you want.
I took a little road trip the other day and got some chicks and hatching eggs. The parent birds look pretty good to me and the guy said they were a few generations removed from Don Nelson birds which are some of the best in the country. I have 24 eggs in the bator so if the hatch goes well you...
Welcome! North of Baton Rouge here. 3/4ths of an acre fenced would be plenty of land for chickens to free range during the day but I would definitely have them a place to be locked in at night. Not sure if you've had ducks before but they are messy compared to chickens. If you're planning a...
Thank you! It was a really tough decision to cull my entire flock of 40 and start over. I was really discouraged and didn't want to get any birds for a while after that but after a few months of looking at my pen sitting there empty I had to get more. I took it as a lesson learned the hard way...
Mrs. Terri,
How have you and your family been doing? When I came and bought that Octagon incubator a while back, I remember you saying you had raised Heritage RIR but had to give them up. I'm looking for some myself now...do you know where I can find some quality birds? Would prefer chicks...
