Only just saw this - how's it doing? I've had a few hatch with partially open navels like that and they've just closed and scabbed on their own within a couple days.
Just the two so far. Nix, the blonde, is staying. The other one already has a home lined up, just waiting for the next hatch (in three days hopefully) so he has a girlfriend to go with.
13...and my friend Tom handed me a box of nine more yesterday
I'm trying to be good and not set them, and instead sell them for him. So...anyone want some eggs? Lol. They're from two unrelated pairs.
My oldest eggs are 32 days in now so I did some whistling, and 10 is alive! B14 I'm pretty sure is too - it rolled instead of wiggling, but I didn't bump the table so I think it moved so hard it rolled itself, haha.
12 I think I saw move. 13 maybe a little too, but that's the one I'm most...
I always mix a little bit of chick grit into their food. Not a ton, just a couple sprinkles.
Day 17 and day 4! So I'm still in the wait and see stage with them all. BUT, my friend that sold me the first four eggs just had her first chick hatch! So chances are very good that these are fertile...
Be careful with those stones. Emus can swallow things MUCH bigger than you think. My adults can eat an apple whole with no problems. Your chicks might be able to get one of those down, and then they might get impacted.
I have one in the works, lol.
Offer them greens! The very first thing I usually get my chicks to eat is collard greens. They are attracted to the color because it's more like a natural food source for them. They will usually start taking greens on day two or three. Then I put some greens in...
As you found out, sometimes they just take longer :)
I have done safety holes before for ones that I was really anxious about - shipped eggs - and it really hasn't hurt.
There have been three that I tried to fully assist. They all died. I got them out of the shell, but they all passed or had...
As long as the towel isn't sliding around on the bottom of the tub, and it isn't made of fibers that will catch his nails, that should be good! I use indoor/outdoor carpeting or fake grass myself. If you have a carpet store nearby you can often get a remnant for a good price.
It means they are getting into the hatching position, and will internally pip soon, or have internally pipped :)
I get stress dreams about it sometimes, LOL. Like, there will be SO many chicks in the incubator and I'm trying to pick them up and carry them to the brooder, but there are just...
Be patient! Lol.
I wouldn't worry about them yet. Especially with the temperature being at 97 at some points, they could take up to 55 days or more.
At least I'm not the only one that dreams of hatching emus :P
Got more eggs today! Two from Oregon from the blonde/white pairs that me and my friend are splitting, and two from a local friend I nabbed to make sure if only one shipped egg hatch, it's not a lone chick. Those will go in tomorrow.
