How to Break a Broody Hen

Not sure why you'd cover the cage at all. But when she's out, does she really potter around all day, or just for an hour then find somewehre to sit? If she's more than happy to indeed stay up and about all day, then she's not solidly broody and might be broken just by doing what you're doing...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Their combs get pale because they aren't eating enough, usually they don't eat much when they're broody. Perfectly normal.

How to Break a Broody Hen

The chicken will let you know. Just pretend it's day 2. Some break in 2 days, some in 4 days. So don't sweat it. They aren't all on the exact same clock anyway.

How to Break a Broody Hen

She needs to be separated and protected from the others no matter if you put her in a cage or whatever. If she's been broody for 2 months she'll likely break soon on her own. I too live in Texas and her welfare is more important than whether she's broody or not.

How to Break a Broody Hen

Your mistake was to let her out of the cage. You leave them in it 24/7 for around 3 days, don't let them out. As to whether they can share a cage, that just depends on how well they get along. Put them both in and watch them.

How to Break a Broody Hen

If it's that hot, I'd leave her in the coolest place possible. If brooding under the shed is the coolest place, leave her be. She'll eventually get up anyway. Being out of the heat right now is much more important than whether she's broody or not.

How to Break a Broody Hen

So here it is 3 weeks later. This time I just let this girl set. Didn't do a thing. Took 4 weeks but now she's up again.

How to Break a Broody Hen

Update on unbreakable hen. I let her have the babies 8 weeks ago, she weaned them at 5 weeks, started laying briefly and is back to being broody again :barnie As I've said before, were she a good mom, I'd have been thrilled. But she's not. I have to put eggs in the incubator for her to hatch or...

How to Break a Broody Hen

I have one that I can break that way. But the rest are a lot more serious about it than that.

How to Break a Broody Hen

I do the wire cage but not the cold water. Just being in that cage with air under there does it 99% of the time within 2-3 days. For the few that won't break that way, I either leave them to it or give them chicks. I guess I'm too soft but a complete dunking in icy water is just something I...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Yes they do bond and are very much affected if their friend dies. Right now, if I raise a few together and want to sell them, I refuse to sell only one, they must stay together. If one of a pair dies, then and only then will I sell one lone bird. Not to say that I sell birds all the time, I...

How to Break a Broody Hen

I'm with Sunny side up. Having them be broody for more than around 3 weeks is bad for their health because they don't eat much when broody. I've had one set for more than 7 weeks when the eggs she was supposed to set were weeks late in coming. She was looking so bad I put cups of water and food...

How to Break a Broody Hen

It's ok to let them out for a few minutes as you are doing. But otherwise keep them in the cage at all times. You'll know when it's worked. Usually only takes around three days but some take up to a week.

How to Break a Broody Hen

Jerry Springer! :lau I have one black Orpington that I did put in the broody buster cage for a little over a week and it didn't break her. Never saw anything like it. Finally I gave her some chicks. She's not the best of moms for sure. But so far they're doing fine. Now I have three more that...

How to Break a Broody Hen

My opinion? Complete hogwash. I have had a couple of different roosters for my girls and if anything, they were broody more with no rooster. A rooster adds a certain amount of unrest and drama to the scene. For the same reason, they lay more w/out one.

How to Break a Broody Hen

When I got to the feed store they had 3 chicks left, no sign to show what breed or anything. All I know is that they are black lol. And of course it was SO busy there I don't think anyone really had the time to go find the chick orders to see what they ordered. So I have three black mystery...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Well, she finally wore me down. Tomorrow, I go to the feed store and her her two chicks. After all this time and all she's been though, still being broody, I just can not say no. And if something happens to the two, at least her broodyness will have been broken.

How to Break a Broody Hen

Yeah, I do actually have the type of space now you suggest, just for that reason. But since two went broody at the same time, the winner was the good mom. I'm just amazed at how I can't break the black one. I've heard of exactly one other hen before that couldn't be broken in a cage off the...

How to Break a Broody Hen

The reason I won't give her any eggs is because the last time, I did, and she was a terrible mom. First of all, she'd leave the eggs for over an hour every day. I got concerned and put some in the incubator as "insurance." Then at lockdown time, I put the incubator eggs under her. Guess what...
