I've never been to the hatchery. I had a friend who worked there, and she hand-picked the breeds I asked for and delivered them. Last year, she brought me the Bielefelder -- and a few more! All my Cochin Bantams are from McMurray; two from her flock when she was downsizing and two she picked up...

Butler County isn't terribly far away from Webster County, but we're not exactly neighbors, either! I have a McMurray Bielefelder, and Liesl is a love. She's a good egg producer, too. Sounds like your plan for a lovely egg basket is coming along nicely. Congrats on your hatches!

You're both making me miss southern Iowa even more. Although, thank goodness, yesterday was one of those rare days when the prairie winds up here didn't almost blow me -- and the poultry -- away. I talked to my sister, and she is aware of the store in Cantril. She says it's a lot like the...

Sorry to hear about your captivity :) in Fairfield. Haven't been there in a great many years. Because of your post, I just googled Dutchman's, and it looks like a cool place. I'll have to see if my sister in Albia has ever been there. To be honest, I've never even heard of Cantril. I'm guessing...

Oh, I get it. You know how they always say, "It's not the heat, it's the humidity"? Up here, it's not the temperature, it's the WIND. It cuts right through a person, and I think it's impossible to get used to; I sure haven't. BTW, I grew up in a house that's probably less than half a mile...

Quite familiar with everywhere you've mentioned. My sister and brother-in-law are still in Albia and own a grocery store there (Jim and Charlie's); they spend a lot of time at Rathbun. I did when I was growing up back there. Good to meet you!

I am a native of SOUTHERN Iowa, which is nothing like where I am now. I'm originally from Albia. Down there, we have landforms and trees so we are not subjected to endless, vicious winds. I will never get fond of the flat, tilled landscape that surrounds me. But it is worth a lot more per acre...

Thankfully, the wind had died down some by midnight here. But I was still glued to the weather reports at 11 p.m. -- which is HOURS past my bedtime. Tornados in one of the adjacent counties had me worried for a while. All I had to do this morning was chase down everything that was blown around...

How is everyone after last night's crazy weather? I'm up near Fort Dodge and spent hours watching KCCI's non-stop weather reporting. I didn't get the tornados or hail that hit surrounding areas, but the winds sure shook the old farmhouse. Hope all are okay.
