Yep, I hold them until they stop squealing. Cup them in your hand or hold them against your chest. They'll stop in a short time. Then just continue to hold them another minute or so and put them back in the brooder. They still squeal the next time you pick them up...I never noticed a change...

This is EXACTLY what happened to me when I hatched a bunch of silkies for my daughter's grandma. I was used to bantam cochin chicks that hardly ever even peep...much less act like they're being slaughtered everytime I put my hand in the brooder!! They were like this until they were about 2 1/2...
