Whew. Had a close call with that hawk this afternoon. Seems my absence the last 2 days had not gone unnoticed............ (shopping the day before for suit) I almost could've got him with a broom, he was that close to me. Had my hens not trusted me, and gotten behind me, i could not have...

I have been thinking about why EE's are considered "shy". I wonder if it's because they are low on the pecking order? My flock is made up of equally "shy" breeds, and i wonder if that's why the EE's are so relaxed and tame. I have noticed that the bottom pecking order birds in the flock seem to...

probably. Anyway, good point. I will get some gatoraid and the banannas, then, I was looking for ideas besides sandwiches, anyway. Don't worry, i will be hanging out somewhere with water, "farmer" tan and all, lol. Haven't been swimming in years, should be nice.

Aarg. Such a chicken mom. Tomorrow i am slated to go to michigan adventure with DH and our borrowed kids, plus more relatives and more kids............ Which should be fun but all i can think about is that stupid hawk i have been seeing, and that the neighbors have been throwing hunting/fishing...

Mine do for me, did you see the pic of one climbing aboard when i fell asleep? I had the camera ready to catch the du'ccle's in the act, but my hen is just as guilty. Anytime she sees me down, there she comes. HAS to be snuggled up to my neck, won't accept a lower station, lol. Queen. The other...

I'm so sorry MOM2 and NOVA. Nova, you did all you could, literally. I really liked him, he was such a good man to his ladies. Things gotta turn around for you, they just gotta. I think he knew he was loved, or he wouldn't have lingered so long. :( The hatchery orpington's are...

Most important piece of advice i got when starting out is to never let them go to bed with an empty crop; I go down the roost at evening time whenever i am in doubt that everyone has eaten well that day. If i find one of the lower pecking order hasn't filled, i feed her separate then put her...

I have strange flock dynamics going on here.......... Since i got the new hen, my orp is becoming #2, whereas before she was the bottom... And she has taken the higher rank a bit far, going after the new girl worse than cocoa, #1. But during the day, she ranges by herself, leaving cocoa and the...

I Must have the dummy hens, mine hadn't a clue what to do when sitting on eggs except to sit. I lost my first one to constipation because she would not get off the nest to eat, and ate some of the nest.... then did not drink the water i had set in there. A few days into the setting i figured...

Glad the hot weather has been holding off....... I got to put everyone away at 7 this evening instead of 8, and i am gone less than an hour and i go riding by on my bike and a HUGE hawk came flying from the woods by my coop! He was big enough to easily carry away one of my big girls...

I use mousetraps, but they are inside a rabbit cage that the birds can't get into- but the mice can. All i have to do then is open the door to the cage in the mornings, and dispose of the bodies! Maybe you could rig up a similar system, build a "mouse box" with a hole and a hinged...

That would be me, glad you liked it but please don't post it everywhere!!! I am working on a cookbook, and though i know this is a public site i like to post a few now and then just for my peeps. Which amount of salt did you use, and did you use the original with 3/4 cups liquids, or the adapted...

Usually there is a bit to heat stroke, and a bit to predators, and a bit to fall sicknesses, but the predator issue is out of control this year due to the extreme weather, and the sustained extreme heat was worse than i remember it ever being. That is throwing even experienced chicken keepers...

My Du'ccle's are super sweet, too. Sometimes i will take a nap out on the lawn chair, and the other day i woke up covered in them! lol. The little porcelain trio seems to think it is great fun to take naps on my chest with me. The "boys" (the millie roos) often chase me all around, just to see...

I consider your fruit popsicle both food and sneaky! My food tastes good, but sometimes my presentation is a tad lacking. Not that it looks terrible, but just don't "pop". :( But i recognize the art when i see it, lol.
