Agreed, frequent humiliation will go a long way toward keeping a rooster humble, at least toward the human doing the humiliating. This guy would frequently challenge hubby and son, but the right tone of voice and posture from me and he would lower his head and submit to my picking him up and...
They dig like prairie dogs, I even had them tunnel up through the concrete floor in my barn. Granted the concrete is old and probably a bit crumbly, but still! We had to resort to poison, it seems to have done the trick because filled-in holes haven't been dug out for several weeks, so...
My turkey hen had a really bad injury on her side last summer and we didn't find it until well after the flies had. We cleaned it up with dish soap and water in a squirt bottle, applied Swat to get the maggots out ( and they practically threw themselves off after the Swat was put on), we then...
Blue Varieties of Peafowl are quite loud during breeding season. Green and green hybrid varieties are not nearly as vocal. I posted a link above if you are interested in hearing the call of a green. My green does this maybe 10 times a year that I hear.
Picture a dippy egg that covers the...
Just FYI, if either of you ever decide to look into Peafowl, the greens are quiet. The second picture I posted is Fred, he is a Burmese Green. Greens are not winter hardy so we keep him in a heated shed during the cold months, not very convenient, but he's gorgeous. The thing is, we cross him...

We are in New Oxford, 10 minutes from Gettysburg. I have 42 of them, half being males, so during the breeding season April - August they can be pretty noisy, because when one calls they all feel the need to answer. The rest of the year they are way quieter than my 3 guineas or my 2...

Agreed, a Peacock's call has a somewhat haunting quality. A guinea's call is like having someone gunning the motor on their weed whacker beside your head.
I have guineas and Peas the Peas are noisier only because there are 42 of them compared to 3 guineas. 3 guineas would be way noisier than 3 Peas. The males are the only ones who make noise and they only do it during the breeding season, those guineas go year round!
Anyone in PA familiar with the Lebanon Valley Exotic Bird and Animal Auction? Looks like it is held spring and fall, but we've never attended, wondering if anyone here has and what it's like? We are more interested in the Peafowl than anything else. Any info is much appreciated.
We have several nice sized garden beds and never had any problems.
We've never had any problems, but we have only 3 chickens, 3 guineas, 1 turkey, and a bunch of Peacocks.
My guineas never even go near the garden and they are free 100% of the time, never been penned, same for the 3 chickens...
Anybody local interested in a Double Laced Barnevelder cockerel? We are in south central PA, I bought some eggs on ebay and hatched 4 chicks looks like 2 are roos. According to the breeders on the Barney thread they are a pretty decent line( C. Ledford? ) They hatched the day after Easter. If...
If I'm not mistaken those would be "lattice method" and "partial product algorithm". I have a son in third grade and when he first came to me for help with these I wasn't sure what language I was looking at! Thankfully they are also teaching the "traditional" method which is what all of us old...
