Blarney I'm not entirely sure they are production birds. Is there anyway to check? I did get 2 more eggs this weekend. They are smallish so I'm assuming they are first eggs.

So my hens are all 6 moths old and to date we have gotten 1 egg. They are all RIR and possibly production breed. It was this past tuesday and we haven't gotten another one since. So obviously only one of the girls is laying but shouldn't she have continued to lay more than 1 egg in 4 days?

Lol. I'm working on it peeps but I think we'll have to move somewhere that the coop can be farther from the house first. Where in WPA are you?

My Peeps, I only have 6 RIR's. All hens. Not planning on getting a rooster. The wife only humors me to a certain extent. Lol.

Thanks Blarney, thanks Stake. I'll check out both places! I figure spring will be better I hate to think of putting two new girls out in the coop after the brooder in cold weather and without friends in the flock yet!

So I am thinking bout getting a pair of Buff Orpington hens in the spring. Any advice or ideas where I can find just 2 in the western pa, Pittsburgh area? Not sure if my local farm store will carry them.

Unfortunately Peeps I was already at work when my DW found it and texted me! However I am still excited and can't wait to get home to look at it. It was even in the nest box. Guess my coop building skills are adequate after all.

I'm not sure if they're production RIR or not. I got them from my local feed store who said they were RIR. They advertise them as RIR not sexlinks though.

Good morning all, I have a couple of questions for ya today. We have 6 RIR pullets who are 20 weeks old give or take a couple of days. None of whom are laying yet. They are all getting quite noisy and one or two are squatting so we should be getting eggs any day now right? I have been told...

I lean over the fence to latch it at night, and use a stick to pop it up in the morning...but if your run is completely closed that may not work as well. The run won't be completely enclosed but the fence will be approximately 5' feet tall with a metal roof. There will be one gate to let them...

That's awesome. Does the latch make it heavy enough to slam or would I need to add something else.

Thanks silkie. That is another option I am considering also. I just had the idea of the magnets and was curious.

I appreciate that input Missy. But then I'd have to get into the run to open and close the door. I'm trying to figure out a way that the kids can do it before school without getting muddy and poo covered.

I'm not sure what you mean JoanO. I've never seen a mailbox with a magnetic lid. My main concern is the chickens bumping it open after being closed in for the night. Even though the run will be well secured we still have lots of predators that may find their way in and I don't want them to have...

Anyone know how well magnets would work for securing a pop door? Like the ones that hold cabinet doors closed? And can they be used when wanting to open and close the door from outside of the run? Thanks.

Apparently my girls are a bit miffed at being stuck in the brooder all day. The last two days they've enjoyed going outside all afternoon while I work on the coop. But today it was 45 and rainy. Tonight they are being a bit noisy and rambunctious. Thankfully I'll have their home done and them...

That does make sense blarney thanks. However I won't be able to leave the pop door open at night as silkie says since there are many predators in my area. I've never seen anyone with a low window though either.
