I woke up early and there WAS a meal worm next to my coffee cup from the girls' dinner last night...does that count?

Its name is Newt and (if you happened to see in the Chicken Breeds forum) I have thought boy since 5 weeks! The popular opinion is pullet (?!) but I still have the nagging feeling we are looking at a cockerel.

Last matter on the agenda: My 10 year old is getting involved with our 4h fair. For Christmas, we are allowing her to have her own mini flock of bantams (maybe 4 - it was on the plan anyway, so our bantam roo had some ladies). Does anyone local hatch them or sell eggs? Where can I get started?

Ok, third time is a charm. I always come back to this thread and try to catch up, but end up getting distracted and looking at pictures of chickens on Instagram.:caf Now 13 weeks in to the 14 birds we added to our flock the last week of August. We have also added a mixed? bantam rooster of some...

So I took a few week hiatus right after joining because I could not get off these boards. :tongue My new babies are 4 weeks old now and we have been busy getting the back of our garage ready to be the larger coop area. I will post pics of everyone as soon as I catch up in this thread!

He is! We have kind of been hanging on because he is a beloved pain in the ass...but he just hasn't been the same since our hen got taken. And our kids haven't been able to go near him for a couple weeks now. We are in Montgomery County but willing to order/travel for a good deal!

Oooh signing up if I still can. I have been meaning to ask the PA people what the best and most economical places are for feed? We didn't have enough chickens for it to matter before buttt with 18 +the a.hole rooster now... Organic preferred.

What burbs are you from, Anne? Let me know! We aren't in a HUGE rush but I think I am finally ready to part with him when the solution arises. He has been organically raised +as much free range as we can offer with our recent fox problem.

Can any of you guide me to rehoming our rooster? We aren't butchers ourselves yet, and we simply couldn't eat this guy. But he is getting increasingly hostile with my kids, including attacks, and the past couple days he is trying to intimidate me as well. We have gone between rehoming and...

We just ordered yesterday what is probably too many chickens but I'd love to keep you in mind for the Spring once I see how these babies do..? Do you have a flock of EE's? Pics of your broody girl!? This is Tonks /Chauncey /****ing Lannister (excuse my language, but it's part of the name).

I totally think they are smart enough to do this! One of the most surprising things about owning chickens, for me, is how intelligent and full of personality they are. My ladies are well fed but they will chatter for treats (+roo flirts me up every time he sees a peach) or a trip to my garden...

I really wanted some fuzzy legged girls but I was weary of adding any...I love to snuggle on my birds and I have a fear of poop always being caked to them. My chickens and their area are all pretty clean so I realize this is probably irrational.
