I get the frustration with feed stores. Oh, the stories we could swap. But this is not the time or place for a "gripe fest" (anyway FaceBook seems to have cornered the market on those). I don't do much with Peafowl anymore, but I have lots of geese now (so many geese). Always happy to get...

Google lies all the time! Your cross creates "Black Sexlinks". To make "Red Sexlinks", you need to use a hen that has the Silver gene. These often appear white and the Rhode Island White is most often used commercially as the female side of a red sexlink hybrid.

Vaccinated almost 340 chicks on Tuesday! That is a record number. I don't vaccinate the ducklings, goslings, quail, and I had 19 from a friend that came by to get her chicks vaccinated, but still, that gives me about 300 babies in brooders to tend. I want to say this place is "a zoo", but well...

I've never seen any "studies" about the correct thing to do with an upside down egg. It happens to me sometimes and if it is early in the cycle (first candling at a week or so), I generally switch them to air cell up. But if they are closer to hatching, I leave them. Either way, I have not...

I use 17 days as the incubation period for coturnix, so I would move them the hatcher on the 14th day. My quail tend to hatch at the end of 17 days, so 18 could be more accurate, but it doesn't hurt to move them to the hatcher a day early.

The Welbars generally lay lighter colored eggs than the Copper Marans, but when they are just starting to lay, it is very hard to tell them apart. 2 of these are Welbars, and I forgot to note which ones! I think every year the Welbar pullet eggs get a bit darker because I select only the darkest...

Why, yes, I do. Bought a new, larger, incubator on Black Friday. Fired it up in January, but it was not running at capacity until a few weeks ago. Last Sunday when I set eggs, there was no room left in the new incubator, so I started up all 3 of the remaining cabinets and filled them. Tonight I...

I have bantam ducks incubating now. Pottstown, 19465 Most will be Aztecs, a rare breed that is getting more widely distributed because they are great layers and hatchers. I also have Australian Spotted Ducks, they are a bit slower laying, but I will have ducklings for them soon. Both of these...

Finally got that new incubator full! It has a capacity of 700 chicken eggs. A few of the trays are not completely full, but some have quail eggs, so there are well over 700 eggs in there! 535 eggs set tonight! The last setting (due 2/18) had a LOT of duds, I think a combo of short days keeping...

Took the first chicks of 2024 from the hatcher today. Will have a few chicks for sale in a few days. Ayam cemani, Copper Marans, Cream Legbars, and some Lavender/Isabel Olive Egger project chicks. Also hatched a bunch more quail. We had a several hour power outage when these eggs we about 15...

Put about 200 quail into lockdown in my new hatcher this evening. First hatch of 2024 and first to use all the new equipment I bought.

Set the first chicken eggs of 2024 last night. Only about 100 eggs, not many of the hens are laying yet.

Turned on my new incubator yesterday and today I loaded 436 quail eggs into it. Only used 3 of the 10 shelves! This thing is BIG! I sold 3 of my 6 cabinet incubators.

Not completely true, much of the egg color produced by a pullet is from her father (let's say half). If the father is a hatchery Copper Marans, even if the mother laid dark eggs, her daughters will lay much lighter. It is very easy to lose the dark egg color with indiscriminate breeding. The...

I have sold 2 of the 3, still have a Dickey cabinet, upgraded with a digital thermostat and an acrylic door. I am also getting a few Marans eggs from my flock. Not very many yet, but here is what I have now. I am just south of Pottstown, in Chester County.

Hope it snows for you and you post pics. Pics of snow is all I really need for it to feel like winter. Last winter we got about 1/4 inch of snow total. Would like to see that little again! Are you raising rabbits for meat or pets? I am still working out all the breeding pens for the chickens...

I moved 100 chickens of various ages into breeding or growout pens today! Very few are left in housing that is unsuitable for winter, though a few pens are a bit crowded at the moment. Now if only some of the outdoor runs would dry out some . . .

My BIL has a giant, tractor-mounted show blower. About a 12 ft intake and can send the snow a long distance. Most years he waits until a blizzard is in the making and then puts the thing on when it is snowing and bitterly cold. Last year he got it on in November. That is why we got less than a...
