Speak of the devil! I just went out and found this:
Based on the size and color, I'm pretty sure that's the first egg from the legbar! It's a pretty dark blue with a hint of green. My adult blue and green egg layers are all molting, and their eggs are bigger, so I don't think it's them--and...
Thanks, @dheltzel , that's what I'm afraid of. :) I wasn't planning to add light, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they decide to start very soon. They have all filled out nicely (even more than the pics show--some of those pics are several weeks old) and have red combs, but none...
Hey there, just dropping in to say hi and share some pics! It's been awhile, and the chicks I got from @dheltzel are 25 weeks old today. They have turned out to be really lovely. :)

@Auroradream26, for the Penn State Animal Diagnostic Lab, they can call 814-863-0837, and their website at http://vbs.psu.edu/adl has a lot of good information as well. I had to call and leave a message there today, and got a call back in just a few hours from a very helpful member of the...
Welcome from Pittsburgh proper! So, what breeds are your 4 (or 8) chicks, and where did you get them? There are some great enablers here if you're ever looking for more, too. ;)
I've been meaning to post some pics of the lovely chicks I got from dheltzel through the chicken train. I did a little photo session yesterday with the CCL, Welbar, and Olive Egger (shown in that order from left to right in the top 2 photos). They are six weeks old, and similar in color, but...
No worries, @fisherlady , no offense taken, and I certainly wouldn't make it a pet!!! I just thought it was cute that my little guy was so enthusiastic. :) As for relocating, it's a bit of different situation here since we live in the city--almost all areas are human areas, so he didn't have to...
Well, that's the thing--it only seems to come once a week or so, maybe less. I'm not sure how long we'll have to leave the trap set in order to catch him. And when we do, my 3 year old was hoping we could bring him inside for a pet. He's been checking the trap with such eager anticipation...
Thanks! I was pretty proud of myself. Unfortunately, he hasn't been back by the trap. According to the video, I almost caught a cat two nights ago (it managed to trigger the trap so it was closed in the morning), but no visitors last night. We continue to wait....
I wish I had purple eggs! :) Those 3 at the top are just white, I think the green countertop as the background is throwing things off.
I loaned out our trap to a friend who was rescuing stray cats--once I get it back (very soon) we will be setting it for the raccoon.
Those do look really pale to be RIR. They look like they might mature to more of a buff or other light color. I would hope they're not Red Stars, because I think in those, the females are hatched more golden, and the males are very pale like that.
Had a banner day yesterday--a dozen eggs from a dozen hens! That means even my 8 year old grande dame, Chamomile, laid. After the first soft shell egg of the season that apparently made her feel so awful, she has laid several more eggs, but she hasn't seemed sick again. She has laid a few...
Always a challenge! They all seem perfectly happy to stand still with their fluffy butts pointing at me, but are constantly in motion when they're facing me. My best tip is to put them somewhere that they don't want to roam too far. That's why I put them on that little wall--high enough...
Picking 2 different ones of the silver am sounds like a good strategy to me--fingers crossed! :) And the legbar is definitely much "creamier" thank the others (that sounds awful, like she's about to become soup--she's not!)--I can't wait to see how she turns out.
A few pics of the lovely chicks from @dheltzel . They are healthy and happy and just as cute as can be. I think I got "about" 3 new ones, but who's counting?
@dheltzel , the Silver Ams are noticeably different--one is smaller, lighter, and is feathering in...
Chicks arrived safe and sound in Pittsburgh today too, from Pottstown via the chick train. Thanks so much @dheltzel and @emorems0 !! I will try to get good pics tomorrow, but they are all snugged up and tucked in bed now. @emorems0 , I hope the rest of your trip home was uneventful!
I am...
Awww! Momma and babies are beautiful! Quads are impressive--did you get boys, girls, or some of each? I aspire to have dairy goats at some point, and Nigies are probably my favorite, but I don't see it happening until my human kids are much more grown.
Wow, big egg! :o I've gotten a couple...
Thanks again for doing this! I'm looking forward to seeing you next week! @dheltzel , my friend apparently decided that discretion is the better part of valor, since she told me this morning that she's not going to add any chicks to the train. I, on the other hand, do not have that...
