Preservation Acres!!!!
Wow...it's been awhile. How are Melbourne and her chicks? Do you have more pics of her and the babies on here somewhere that I have been missing?

Don't worry...Melbourne will make it.
Layer mash....is that all you have available at the moment?
It's best to start chicks on a Chick Starter feed...it has higher protein, and it's formulated for their needs. Layer mash has lower protein, and higher levels of calcium - which can be...
My broody would let the chicks eat first, then she would normally sneak in a few bites here and there. I think when the chicks first hatched she gave more to them, but as time went on she would hog more and more of it (once the chicks had gotten the hang of what to eat and all...)
Just make sure...

....SO.........if I come trick-or treating at your house Preservation Acres, do I get a chick?
Looks like Melbourne is a natural. I love seeing the momma with her babies. So cool.
How did the rest of the hatch go?

I love having a broody too...but I'm glad not all are broody...otherwise I would get no eggs!
Hopefully Melbourne doesn't freak out when she has little fuzzies running around under her.
BTW, I have 2 BA hens right now that I raised from chicks this year...I have a sneaking...

Just don't reach under her and check the eggs too much...during the hatch they need the humidity from her, plus you don't want her to stress out.
Is your camera all ready?

Haha...Michiganders are taking over! Hijackers!!!
Dreaming...I live in Mattawan...work in Kzoo...and my chickens live at a friends farm in Lawton. Good to see someone else from the area!
Ok....so Preservation Acres....how's it going?!?!! It's almost showtime...

Do you have a sheltered area outside where she and the chicks could stay apart from the flock? like an extra part of the coop? barn stall? shed, etc?
I think it would be okay to keep them inside for a few days, but she will be able to do just fine with them outside, as long as they are...

I don't know about movement/wiggling...I've never incubated before...
Good to hear they're all developing! Hopefully they all hatch fine...
Except for her potty break, I would probably leave momma and her eggs alone now....and wait!
You never know...they might hatch a few days earlier than...

Well...they will lose SOME weight since they aren't eating much...but I dunno about drastic weight loss this soon. I've heard that some determined broodies can waste away if they stay broody for a long long long time w/o being able to hatch anything out.
Sounds like she had a heavy...

LOL! Hey...whatever...I like pics. But, if you do get camera happy I may have to unsubcribe...lol.
I was more of a basket case when I was trying to raise chicks on my own in the house...It's just SO much easier having a broody.

You ARE worse than a kid waiting for Christmas!!!
We do expect lots of chick pics in a week. Like this one.....
(My BO with her foster chicks this spring - her first time being a momma. )
