Quote: Boys will already be getting dark feathers on their shoulders, girls will not. Girls will stay lighter and the boys just keep getting darker... So the shoulder feathers are the ones to watch and not the wing feathers? We have 8 chicks total and 2 show very little color on the wing...

Quote: All the F1's will be split/black in color. Lavender is indeed introduced that way, but color isn't all. Although that's how it seems with how poor of quality most Lavender chickens are these days, it takes getting the breed traits in too. For Ameraucanas, it is keeping a true breeding...

I have a question. If you have lavendar birds of one breed, and breed them to blacks from another breed, Will you get some lavendar of the 2nd breed. I realize you will get some splits, and that is ok. Or will all the F1s be split to black? Is this how people introduce lavendar into a breed? Sue

Quote: Where does Wheaton, Blue Wheaton, Blue Wheaton Splash, fit in here? It's not on ABC. Experts? Its the same, Wheaten is the black, BW is blue, and splash is splash. Although, with mine, its been my experience that I get more blue wheaten than anything else. Maybe I'm just lucky...

Quote: The cockerels start to get dark feathers in a few days. Pullets take longer and their feathers are much lighter. I have 2, 1 week old wheaten cockerels and they have dark feathers already. They are also available if anyone is interested.

Quote: Like anything else, it all rests on the determination of the individual. I've had some kids that wanted to improve their breeds, not only Ameraucanas, but the parents poo pooed that. If the parents don't want to help out, the kids are stuck. Mostly, I found that I got Dairy kids that...

Quote: This is the age of "everyone deserves to win" which I totally disagree with. Kids feel entitled to always get something as a reward just for showing up. Kids learn how to handle disappointment by experiencing some while they are young. If they are always rewarded, even for poor...

Quote: Try telling this to our 4-H leader here. They want to buy the Sexlink pullets for our 4-h er's. I don't believe this is very good on our kids as far as showing goes. They do however auction the pullets, 3 in a pen off after the show. I just think that they ought to encourage...

Quote: I recall last year someone showing here how at a Junior show there were numerous Easter Egger cockerels, plus a hen that had a single comb, white earlobes, yellow legs, and no beard/muffs. Wow. I seriously wonder, what makes some people think they have Ameraucanas? Do they seriously...

Quote: According to my latest SOP, Dq's for Ameraucanas are "Presence of ear tuffs, absence of beard and muffs." So I am assuming off color, includeing the legs, are faults, not dq's. I would hope not, or that they at least change it! Every Ameraucana breeder knows one of the biggest red...
