I know, I hatched about a dozen eggs from my Blehm lav splits last year and only got one lav, but she is really nice. I am just happy to start building up a flock of quality birds.
P.S. For anyone going to the show in Smithfield on Saturday. I have a pure white (with willow legs) ameraucana who is very correct except that he is a bit too small for my tastes (I also don't have any white ameraucanas to breed him to). Would anyone be interested in him if I brought him to...
Hatched out my first eggs from my Smith birds. They're lav splits but they all came out black which is okay with me. Out of four eggs that I put in to test fertility, all four hatched out very healthy.
AND I AGREE WITH BETH, SHIPPED EGGS ARE THE WORST I HAVE WASTED SO MUCH MONEY. One...
I have a white am roo who is just about perfect in color, beard and muffs, leg coloring. Only problem is that he. Holds his tail slightly too high, but I'm not too concerned about that. The other thing is that he's slightly too big to be a bantam and slightly too small to be a standard.
I...
I let them free range when they're young. I separate them when they start laying. This is the first time I've had this trouble. But I know a lot of people who let their breeders free range with their free ranging flock when breeding season is over. I guess I just have to anticipate their...
Well, I separated them on the first and I just set some on the 21st, so I'm hoping that they come out purebred. They're my Paul Smith birds (with a couple of Blehm birds mixed in).
Can anyone tell me how long a hen has to be in with a rooster before all of her eggs will be fertilized by that roo? I separated by ams into breeding pens and I had them in there for at least a week when I put an egg in the bator to test fertility. it hatched this past weekend and the darn...
Oz has been doing this for awhile, long before the disaster. He lives in annaheim and has a method (a permit maybe?) of moving the eggs from Ca. to the islands. He does this for the heritage RIR's that he hatches for himself. He is very open and forthcoming about the operation and he is just...
The leakage really stinks, he has such elegant lines. Though, I was talking with Paul Smith the other day and he said that when he started, he had roos with squirrel tails and leakage etc, you do the best with what you've got and focus on the positive. It was a very encouraging conversation, I...
