Yes. The breeder was saying you needed 2 porcelains because of the recessive gene. It had me all confused.

I am sure this has been covered somewhere in the past 864 pages.... I acquired some Porcelain hens over the weekend. The judge said I should mix them back to my Millies to enhance their color. The breeder said to NOT do that because it will not work. What is the correct way? I am new to the...

I have a 9 week old roo and pullet that are a color I have not ever seen before. Not quite grey, not quite cream, not quite white...but in between all of them. The color doesn't show in pictures. Any ideas? I have a lavender hen whom I am assuming is the mom. Roo's could be Millie or Golden Neck.

Ugh, I had a sick roo that I knew wasn't going to make it. I held his head repeatedly in my hands trying to muster courage to do so. I couldn't bring myself to do it. I was in tears, hubby was not home and it needed to be done. I went inside and found the .22 rifle. I found this to be fast...

How long do you hold on to your chicks before you sell them? I am in the process of trying to get some show quality birds for fair in August. I have hatched a little more than 2 dozen. I don't want to be over run with chickens come spring time.

Here is my coop set up. The smaller one on the right is for the show birds. The pen attached to it can be open and extended to the pen behind in summer so they have more room to play while the free rangers from the large coop are out playing. In winter, I can separate the pens so that each...

My coop itself is 4x6 feet. I took out the perches as they weren't using them anyways. I have nesting boxes low enough for them to hop into inside. As far as birds, the number fluctuates as I grow out some of the juveniles in here, but the number of adults remains at about 3-4 roo's and 4-6...

I have them in a coop with an attached 12 x 12 pen. I keep the coop lined with about 6 inches of pine shavings year round. The pen area I add in a lot of grass clippings, leaves and other soft compostable materials. We show in August and the judge complimented us on how great their feet...

All my birds. I had one broody hen who was a frizzle...but she had been broody for about 3 weeks by that point (and actually hatched these cuties) and I assumed none of the eggs were hers. Let alone 3, since I collected all the eggs in a 24 hour period. That's what has me the most puzzled.

The only birds in the pen were D'Uccles. I do not have any Silkies. I have one other non D'Uccle roo, but he is a 13# RIR cross and there is no way he is able to get into the breeding pen. It's perplexing....

Here are my "Mystery Chicks". They were the ones I had spoke of about 10 pages or so ago that were hatched from D'uccles with the only difference being an antibiotic treatment prior to egg collection. I think they are kind of dorky cute! Sorry they aren't the best photos, I was using my cell...

I have the mini with the auto turner. I love it. I can also fit 7-10 D'uccle eggs in there with some creative placement. I have had great hatch rates, it is easy to clean and it is SO fun to watch them hatch. I thought about getting a larger one, but then I would be hatching too many and my...

I was furious! My kid was devastated and blaming ME for bringing the wrong chickens! The judge said he "never heard of a Golden Necked". I couldn't believe it!!! I pulled up on my phone the recognized colors, but by that time it was too late. I would like to take one of the boys I showed...

Here are a few pics of my Golden Neck boys. Are they show quality or pet quality? We had one in the local 4H show and he got DQ'ed because the judge said Golden Necks were not a recognized color. I tried to discuss it with him but he insisted it wasn't recognized. I was hoping to learn...

I used Doxycycline. It is a strong antibiotic but I had some upper respiratory issues going through my flock. They all got treated as a preventative. I was not happy to do it, but I figured it was better than loosing my flock. Some of my free rangers died. Luckily non of the D'uccles were...

Foot skin is not black like a silkie. Normal tan little legs. The feathering isn't as much on the feet as I have had in the past....but these are like NOTHING I have hatched in the past either! I am convinced it was the meds at this point.

I have one other roo besides all my D'uccle boys. He is a standard 13# mix of RIR and EE. (I am guessing on that). There is no chance he was with my girls. He free ranges during the day. Unless he can figure out a locking pen door or coop latch, he hasn't had contact with them. I am...
