ESofVA, it does sound like your d'Uccle might be laying...although my own Silkie lays I'd say equal sized eggs, not smaller. I only have the one Silkie, so not much to compare to. My Silkie's eggs are lighter in color, just about white, while the d'Uccle eggs are definitely cream-colored...
Guys, look at his signature line - this is a judge responding honestly. I think we should appreciate him/her taking time to try answering questions....
As I was reading along and catching up, I noticed fewer and fewer of the long-time, knowledgeable folks posting. I am afraid this thread's...
Hi everyone! I don't know if anybody here remembers me, but I took the winter off. Back now, and on page 665 (OMG, the reading...) to catch up with yall. Nice to be back! Missed this thread! Had to stop reading out of frustration with my flock but we're doing better now. :)
I did it!!! My first ever multi-quote! WOOT! I somehow missed your post, wegotchickens, for which I apologize. Helpful one, too, so thanks to mstricer for quoting it!
You confirm one of my goals, which is to get very small d'Uccles. I have read somewhere a couple times that the breed is...
True actual Chocolate - Pure English Bantam Orpington. I think I said Cochin before, oops! I'm extremely short on Mille Fleurs (one pullet only ) so I'm going to put him with a couple Porcelain hens in the spring. There are a couple breeders here whom I've been talking with, and I'm getting...
It's been a little while since I've visited this thread - hi folks!
Some of the chicks I recently received from mstricer (before the cold set in and made it too cold to ship):
I got 14 but 3 died about 4 days ago from unknown causes. I'm afraid I brought something home from the...
They are silver quail, yes. I'm hoping to get a new camera soon, as my current one is pretty much useless. These girls have the "bull-neck" look that is SOP for d'Uccles. Looking down at them from above, their body is sort of teardrop shaped from front to back - large, full neck and chest...
I see! Thank you for that, it makes a lot of sense.
ETA: I've chatted with mstricer about the 14 chicks I got from her recently, and none of them are blind, based on how they react to my presence and what their eyes look like. All quite healthy and vigorous - I don't think she has a problem...
I am by no means an expert, but the biggest flaw I see is their too-long necks. A lot of d'Uccles and Booted bantams have that problem in the US, from what I can tell. I'd show them!
I haven't lost a one! They are so nice to listen to...chirping OMG a baby just divebombed out of the brooder!!! be right back
Ok back. Wasn't a d'Uccle baby that flew out - was a blue egger I'm breeding for my own use.
Anyway, they are doing great! All getting along well with the other...
mstricer, just in case you didn't read what I wrote correctly, I was raving about how wonderful your babies foot feathers are! Or are you saying that they will get even more amazingly long? Nice.
I've never seen non-hatchery d'Uccles babies before - what a difference! The body shape is more condensed - which if you look at pictures from oversees, is more correct. The foot feathering is out of this world! No, "hmmm, will they grow in more when the chick gets older?" Nope. Copious and...
Many hatcheries ship Priority, not Express, as they have found the chicks do NOT arrive earlier. They would not risk their guarantee on something as dangerous as shipping unpressurized, I'm sure.
