Why would anyone want to make a 'laying line' out of a dual purpose breed? Isn't that what the hatcheries do to sell more chicks? But hey, if he can get $10 a chick at least he makes them sound 'special'
The wattles and comb of this cockerel seem excessively large and the feathering seems somewhat mottled for a buckeye. Although some of the pullets in the following posts look like decent birds. Ma y have just been one chick that was a cross breed.
I would not judge a buckeye by eye color at an early age. The orange eyes that the breed is known for is not noticeable at a young age. Also feather color changes A LOT during the first year. I've had young birds with white flight feathers that grew out of them by 6 months. Size is what I would...
