By the way, I washed some chicken feet today. I have confirmed it, my JG's are Australorps and my Australorps are JG's, thanks Tractor Supply It's all good. They're nice birds, not too screwed up compared to my other sad excuses for chickens I've gotten from them. Hey, we all gotta start...

Oh I bet he was beaming with pride! What a wonderful judge to be so encouraging too! It's so important to encourage these things, too many kids that don't even know nuggets come from an animal. Everything happens for a reason. Evan was meant to go to that show ^^

I'm still not sure what is what in my birds. Every time I'm convinced, something else pops up that makes me doubt. I've got two birds sold to me as JG, and they are large, especially the cockerel. They're 9 weeks now.. I also have two 8 week old Australorps (or supposed Australorps) and...

My rooster LOVES scrambled eggs and the bugs we find in the yard, especially cutworm grubs. I also give them the weeds I yank out: clover, chickweed, violets, woodsorrel etc. Any kitchen scraps like bread, fruit, vegetables (raw, I don't want to give them salt and seasonings). If it's cold...

With 6 acres, perhaps getting a guard animal of some sort is an option. Especially geese/swans and hooved animals can be quite defensive of their turf, and they wont try and eat chickens. Ofcourse, it all depends on how large and bad these dogs are.. a big vicious dog can take down anything.

Not sure on that one, both my birds feathered equally, both their tails took forever to come in. They're a male and a female. The male was very easy to pick out, he had a big comb at 2 weeks.. of my mixed flock he's the only one with miniature wattles at 7 weeks, everyone else is just now...

Glad there is somewhat of a resolution found. Hope you may find some birds, as good, or perhaps better than what you had before!

Very true. However, folks should also respect your property and restrain their dogs. It's a give and take situation. A little respect for one another would go a long way.

Trouble with 'shoot, shovel, shut-up' is that they're likely to just replace the dog, so you'd have the same issue again. Taking the long road of polic & legal action is generally the more permanent solution. Hate to hear you lost your chickens, this day and age the lack of responsibility...

I am curious, every time I see a 'Is this a Jersey or an Australorp?' thread, everyone always jumps straight to the feet issue. Now, considering the majority of birds on this site are hatchery stock, the yellow feet thing is not that dominant a trait in those birds, since most aren't pure. I...

I am really starting to adore my Jerseys. They're just wonderful birds. Very balanced, they're pretty good foragers, but they're not 'wild' like some breeds are. My rooster is extremely curious and is forming a bond with my 4 year old (he digs up worms for Mr.Roo). I could forsee the Jersey...

Mine are in the coop, and they're 5 weeks. They're pretty much feathered, just lacking a tail *laugh*

I've got a 5 week old cockerel, he's got a laaarge comb and now his wattles and other facial bits are sprouting. Is it usual for this breed to be so quick to grow their adult features? I know they're overall slow growers, so it surprised me. I could tell he was a male at 2 weeks, his comb was...
