Although it isn't desirable to have brown in giants it does sometimes occur even in full stock birds, same as with other animals. You may very well have pure giants but they just may have some undesirable coloring in the mix that would be DQ in the a show.

I would guess cockerel is about 6 months old. Judging from the tail feathers at least. I have had other breeds that did not crow until later if in a pen with a dominant roo.

No Casey County auction. I got 10 hens and have 6 eggs in 2 days. It takes time for them to adjust to new environments. I think the ones I bought have been in small confines, they act like then are starving and don't know which end is up! They will settle down in a few days. I really look...

Hey blackTNgiants, I did the same thing. There was a huge Amish Consignment auction this past week end and I bought blues and splashes. Each group was 5 hens and 1 roo. All were listed as 1 year old. I have already had 6 eggs from them. Can't wait to start incubating them! Adding this...

Usually having combs that early indicates a roo. The third one may go either way. Leg circumference is also a good indicator. Either way I love this breed, don't you?

When I posted the pictures of my blue jersey giants i was hoping for some feedback. I did get some feedback, mainly questioning the color of their feet. Another comment suggested since they may be crossed with an orpington because of their shape. I know someone mentioned hatchery stock...

Ok, how could I tell if my birds are really jersey giants or if they are blue orpingtons or crossed? Do the orpingtons have more black on the feet?

Ok, I see what you are saying about Hank's shape now. the girls are a bit more linear and and 2 of the girls do have more yellow on the bottoms of the feet but 1 girl and the Hank are lighter. Not white but yellowish. Thanks for your input.

Ok, checked the bottoms of the feet, sorta tan/wheat colored, black/slate around the edges but had the light coloring on the balls of the feet and toes. Girls aren't laying yet, they are still pullets but one of them does have definite reddening and a larger comb.

Not sure, I guess I should go look. I do have Australorps and believe me these birds dwarf them! The giants are way bigger everywhere than those guys. Shaped differently as well.
