    Show me your quail pens!!!

Quote: Things to keep in mind while building pens for quail.... Stacking one pen on top of another means you emptying poop pans...or the bottom cage is a really bad neighborhood... Cages under 2.5' off the ground require bending over to service and are closer to visiting animals... Cages...

    Show me your quail pens!!!

I have a lab. Considering what she does to dog toys, there is no way I want her near my quail. I also have a young pup. Given what he does to a roll of toilet paper...nope. Not letting him in with any quail, either.

Very nice, Konjo! Those are some lucky birds. (Shifty eyes as I think about new ways to construct a sandbox...)

    Show me your quail pens!!!

Quote: I understand! I did the same with my birds. I do have four still out in my garage, but it isn't terribly cold in there, and they are dry & out of the wind. I have to have a bit of heat in my garage because my washer is out there & there is a bathroom out there. So, I can't let it get...

Petej - Be careful if you put them back out. Depending on where you are, you may need to re-acclimate them slowly. Since you've had them under heat, you won't want to put them right back out into cold weather (if it's cold where you are).

Whew! I hope they are no worse for their chilling.

    Show me your quail pens!!!

Thanks! I thought that's about what they looked like. I figured I could build something similar to that eventually. Figured my roosters might like it. They are mostly in wire bottom cages now. I really don't like keeping birds on wire.

JJ - about what are the measurements on the individual partitions in the condo? How many birds are in each one?

    Show me your quail pens!!!

Nah, I spoil the little brats... They'd love all that space. Though, I can see giving them some "shelves" to jump up onto in there, about six or eight inches up. One of my pens has a big cement block in it & they "love" it. They are always sitting up on top of it looking around the garage.

Nice! I can see that in my garage, JJ...it would just about give each rooster his own apartment...

Here's my other quail pen: Housing two coturnix roos...so far, they aren't hating on each other (or lovin' on each other...) It is up on blocks but has been moved from where that picture was taken.

Quote: That's a nice looking brooder, too! My little blue brooder was a fun project. I always hunt at the thrift store for things I can renovate or re-purpose. I usually don't find many things that I want to take the time to redo, but that just JUMPED out at me as having possibilities...

    Show me your quail pens!!!

Here is a button quail cage that I built. It was designed specifically to fit the set of shelves that it is on. While there are 3 quail in the picture, there are actually two that live in it. The third was VERY temporary - as in a matter of an hour -- while I did some repairs on the cage he...

    Show me your quail pens!!!

These are what my larger cages look like. They are 4x4x4, but actually sit up a bit off the ground because they are on heavy duty wheels. These will support my weight but wouldn't support a person much heavier. I really should have added one more floor brace & used slightly heavier OSB for the...

    Show me your quail pens!!!

Here's a small brooder I just did today. It started out looking like the first picture. I found it at a thrift shop. Obviously, it was ugly as sin. The hinges had paint in them, as did the screws. The spiderman fabric was stapled down. I am assuming it was supposed to be wrapped up around...

    Show me your quail pens!!!

I did see some threaded ones elsewhere. It's a classic case of getting what you paid for. These were cheap...and it SHOWS. Then again, it wouldn't cost much more to make them with threads on them or something else to keep them from popping off soda bottles. I'm back to using my previous...

    Show me your quail pens!!!

Quote: I have some of the ones sold at GunDogSupply. I HATE THE DARNED THINGS. They make a mess. That might be fine if your waterers are outside, but mine are inside. After the twentieth water spill I quit. One of these days I'll list them as an auction. Bah! The ones I got are not...
