    Araucana thread anyone?

I have some good blacks that I hatched this spring to work with for this next years breeding. This girl is tufted and has the slow feathering gene. I will be using her in the barred project pen. A couple of black pullets enjoying the sun. Here is my clean faced black roo. He is 7 months...

I am partial to the barred/cuckoos! This is my latest roo from this years hatching. I have been very selective and culled anything with leakage.

If you ordered them from a hatchery, you will be getting Easter eggers. In order to get true araucana, or true ameraucana for that matter, you will need to get them from a breeder. The number of breeders is growing so they are probably easier to find today than they were years back. These forums...

    Araucana thread anyone?

A while back there was a discussion regarding feed used for a breeding flock as opposed to layers. Smoothmule had suggested that the additional calcium in layer feed is designed to make hard shells for the commercial egg producers. That may not be the best for chicks trying to hatch. I came...

This is a fun time of year. The spring chicks are maturing. You get to see what progress was made. I am getting the first pullet eggs. The one on the left is the third egg from the first pullet to start laying. The right egg is the first one to be laid by the second pullet to begin.

    Araucana thread anyone?

If she is mottled, none of her chicks will be mottled when breed to your roo unless he has one copy of mottling. Mottling is recessive so for it to show, the chick must get one copy form the roo and one copy from the hen. If you breed your roo and hen, you will get blacks and blues (with red...

    Araucana thread anyone?

The more experienced you are the quicker you can tell. Especially with your own flock. I thought I was getting pretty good at telling with my own birds, then I bought a chick form some one else. I was convinced it was a cockerel up until she was about 4 months old. I was wrong. You look for...

What a great find! It is hard to tell from just a photo but he looks to be the lavender version of a gold duckwing? He might be blue though, I can't tell. I am wondering if she might be mottled. Both are unique. Welcome to araucana ownership. You can't beat free! What part of MO do you live in...

You will have to share photos as these mature. It will be an education for most of us to see the difference between chocolate and dun as chicks, adolescents and mature. Very cool. Could the difference between the two chocolates be like blues where you can have light blues and dark blues?

    Araucana thread anyone?

Just went out to look at some of the youngsters and made two discoveries. First, is it possible I hatched mottled chicks? I am replacing my main roo for next years breeding so I have rotated 3 roosters into the blue/black pen in hopes of getting an unrelated cockerel chick. These two chicks are...

    Araucana thread anyone?

I have really focused on the facial features of my barred araucana when deciding where to cull. Here is a face shot of one of the cockerels that has made it through the culling thus far. He has made it far enough to start crowing and dancing for the girls. I love how red his head is! His barring...

Thanks for sharing these photos. I wish the araucana club website had more photos of correct examples. I really like the way the ameraucana club shows chick, cockerel and pullet photos of each color.

Just had to share this picture. I had a hen lay a tiny egg. Must have just been a misfire. I have it next to a normal araucana egg and and my barred leghorn egg. Being so small it also got a double dose if blue pigment!
