Thanks for the input! Not sure if we want to do chicks again or just get pullets. I'm definitely leaning towards EEs though :) Are they nice birds? Are they flighty? Our chickens stay in a run with a coop and free range in a portable run or if we are outside with them. We live in an area where...
Hubby agreed to 2 more hens :) hmmmm.... what to get. My daughter wants a "zebra" chicken (Barred rock) I think EEs would be fun, but I also like the buffs. Out of those what ones would get along best with 4 RIR hens? Or just stick with the same breed? This last year was our first year raising...
It was about 2 weeks for the egg after the first squat for us. Yeah we have a few hawks in our area, the girls are getting use to it, but they are always enclosed. Saw the hawk pick up a huge rabbit their her day. Mean little sucker.
Hilda is a hen! Still has the biggest comb and wattles though ;) We got our first egg Friday (while we were out if town) and the second one today. All the chickens are squatting now :) glad to have raised all four from day old chicks!!
You
You remembered!! I'm impressed
Actually no, I still can't tell. "Her" comb and wattle haven't changed, still a pinkish color and hasn't gotten any bigger. I'm just waiting for a crow or an egg. I mean I should be able to tell by now, right? Haha.
Yes! We have 2 that they've been around since last year. In fact the the big one we named it Foghorn last year.
They are fully in closed in their pen, and foghorn can't get to them. I'm sure they don't know that. Should I just close up the coop and make them stay outside? Or would that stress...
Thanks for the in put. Their area is shaded, and they can under the coop as well. They were in a brooder longer than they should have been, had to wait for the hubby to get back to build the coop
Guess I just have some silly lazy chicken. Haha.
I have 4 production reds, 14 weeks. They have been outside only for a little over a month. The past couple of days I've noticed they are spending more time in their coop. Is this normal? There is nothing in there for them, all their food and water is outside. They seem healthy and happy. Are...
Well I haven't found an organic mill, but I'm still on the look out. I did find a retailer for countryside organics layer feed, but not for starter/grower. Through Grace valley farms (they are licated in trinity) the feed is $34 for a 50# bag. It's cheaper than going through the site directly...
Do any of you use or have tried sand in the coop or run? Going through options and trying to figure out easiest cheapest and cleanest for our chickens!! Coop is getting started next weekend, hubby is finally back ;)
Everything seems to be about the same. Legs all the the same and tail feathers look the same now (about a week ago Hilda's looked a little shorter) the other thing is her neck feathers are taking longer to come in where as the other 3 are a dark red in that area.
