Hi everyone! My husband has now processed chickens twice- one earlier this week and two yesterday. He had one yesterday who had a full crop, gizzard, and intestines and also a crusty butt. The rooster had been penned and withheld food but got loose this morning. He wasn't out long enough to get...
So not an issue for meat birds either? Since we are relatively new to chickens, trying to figure out what to cull for and what you can or can't eat out of culls. Thanks again.
Out of our 10 hens, 3 are broody. The one that has been broody the longest has been on her nest for 20.5 days. I am checking outside several times today hoping to see some baby chicks soon!
Meme's Poultry is sending me some Ameraucanas in a couple of weeks. She may add in an extra one for you. I think you live close to us. We are in Wilsonville.
So, 3 out of our 10 hens are broody! One is RIR, one is a mixed breed (was supposed to be RIR) and one is a bantam cochin. Hopefully we will have some good mommas raising their chicks soon (plus the other hens' eggs they are sitting on).
They were supposed to be RIR feom an individual but our 8 hens all vary in their looks. A couple look like each other but different looks among the 8. 3 of our 4 roosters are getting white feathers in their tail so I am guessing they are mixed.
Hi everyone! Our hens are laying (they are 7 months old) and seem fine but their combs are all laying over droopy. The combs are red and they free range but know where their water is. Any advice? Thanks!
Does anyone know of Alabama farmers that grow wheat, corn, or milo that is non-gmo (probably applies to just corn) and naturally grown without chemicals? Thanks!
Our chicks are beginning to lay. Well we find the eggs in the barn in random places along with in their nests. Well hubby has found two now that were not out in the sun (they were in the barn) that look like they were sun bleached on one side and somewhat discolored in places. It is a brown egg...
Since we are new to chickens (ours are just old enough to lay now), I have wondered about turkeys. I have heard not so pleasant experiences in raising them. Anyone have good things to say about raising a turkey or two?
Does anyone have experience with mealworms? I am wondering how long it takes to get a large enough quantity to supplement. 50 or so birds (we are considerig meat birds this fall).
We have one rir rooster that is a lower pecking order rooster that tends to have the bantam cochin frizzles with him often. What is funny is that my husband has seen them on the roost when he has checked on them with the roo allowing 2 of the frizzles to roost under his wings.
Weird acting chickens...Since our chickens started laying a few days ago, we find some eggs in their nests and some in the barn. So, today my husband fed them around 6am and left them in their run. Thy have a little bit of greens growing under a frame but otherwise they don't free feed. I just...
Also, we have never slaughtered a chicken. Any tips or directions? I have heard you have to let them rest after slaughtering. Is this necessary if you are going to cook right away? Thanks!
Chicken breed question... Our RIR hens are great. The roosters not so much, especially with a young child. Any suggestions on generally more docile breed roosters that would be fine to breed to the RIR once we get ready to have more chickies? I understand you can't trust any rooster around a...
