To funny! I would love to sound an alarm too. Although apparently my sneeze sounds just like the roosters warning of overhead threat because when I sneeze while in the run everyone runs for cover, lol.
I don't know what MPC is, but I bought day old Silkies from a hatchery and fertile eggs from a breeder. The hatchery included 3 extra chicks in case a few died. Out of 18 eggs from the breeder 3 hatched, only one of those lived past the first week. All 18 hatchery chicks survived. Now that they...
This summer I hatched 8 Silkies. Two of them began crowing at about 3 months old. Since I didn't plan to keep any males I waited to see if any of the others were males before re homing them. Fortunately none were, but while I had them the two boys got along just fine together. When they were...
That is just so awful! This is the reason I went overboard in the beginning and made Six foot tall walls and covered the top of my run. I didn't want to have to experience something like this. I am so sorry :(
Then I would give her to your friend :)
My Barred Rock girl is treading on thin ice with her pecking and attitude. As long as she doesn't get outright aggressive she can stay, but I won't keep a mean chicken. My granddaughter loves tending the chickens and I don't want her having a bad...
So weird, my BO girls are the sweetest. My Barred Rock can be a turd...she pecks at spots on my clothes and no one else does so I think she uses the spots as an excuse to peck. She won't let me touch her and turns to act like she might be angry if I do touch her. My BO'swill not only let me...
Good thing my granddaughter is not there, she would collect all those eggs for you! LOL. I put two fake eggs in the nest boxes to show my new layers that they don't belong on the floor of the coop, and my granddaughter collected the fake ones up too. :)
Check with Kelar, she sells silkie eggs under the name of CatDance. She is really easy to work with, does a beautiful job of packing the eggs for safe shipment and she has a great reputation here on BYC!

You can make you own electrolyte...
2 cups water
2 Tablespoons Molasses or Honey
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Mix till dissolved, refrigerate the extra not being used.
Save you a trip to town.
So sorry about the baby chick. I hope little Mumsy gets nice and strong.
I showed my new chick the water nipple as soon as she could walk around well (about 5-7 hours after hatching). Now she is using the water nipple on her own. She has been nibbling food and drinking water so even though they can go a few days without, I feel you should offer it anyway.

We have a pellet stove for heating our home, so I happened to have pellets available. Here is a post I shared about how to prepare the pellets.

How has your hatch rate been when hatching Karen's shipped eggs? I realize that shipped egg tend to have a much lower hatch rate, just curious. Do you have pics of your silkies from her?
