Thank you. That makes sense. I'll keep these babies in the brooder.

    Silkie thread!

I have chicks hatching in the incubator today, and I have a 5 month old Silkie hen in the coop. She is already laying, but shows no interest in sitting on her eggs. Is there any chance she would accept a chick, or is she far too young? I think she's too young.

    Silkie thread!

Well, at five months old, my handsome blue Silkie cockerel began to crow. Loudly! So, I rehomed him and his best girl, a pretty splash pullet, that same day. That afternoon, I noticed that my white Silkie, Cottonball, was starting to squat. (Here she is with her muddy cropped crest. I missed...

Thanks for your input. Wow, even his daughters were mean? That is a really good point about not breeding a bird that does not have a lovely temperament. If this cockerel moves from the sweet side to the evil side, I'll definitely NOT breed him. We'll see how he does in the next couple of months.

That is priceless. Yeah, this guy runs screaming from the Red Star hens, so I think he is just trying to find some way to assert himself. I also pick mine up when he is being a jerk.

    Silkie thread!

My blue Silkie cockerel is now 4 months old and very handsome. He has also started to peck at me! I know roos can be aggressive, but I have also heard that Silkies are very gentle. Does anyone have experience with a Silkie roo getting aggressive with humans? These are just little pecks, they...

That is funny! Hmmm... I've kept my puffballs clean and dry, thus far. They have a big, fully covered run. Maybe I should go for haircuts?

    Silkie thread!

Oh, that is fascinating! How and when do cockerels change colour? When I was looking into Silkies, I thought I would like the paint and splash best... but now that I have four fluffy Silkies in four different colours (blue, splash, white and partridge) - the partridge is the one that I am...

    Silkie thread!

That is so interesting! Thank you for letting me know. As I mentioned, I'm new to Silkies, and it is too easy to have one experience go a certain way and then take that for a general rule, which it clearly isn't. I appreciate your educated input.

    Silkie thread!

Congratulations! I am not a longtime Silkie owner, but this is what I've noticed from my recent venture into Silkieland (I also have four). -They are amazingly cute and sweet, gentle and easy to handle. -They can't fly at all. -Once they reached three months, their crests grew so big and...

    Silkie thread!

Awww, beautiful! I miss the days when my Silkies had smaller poufs, and could still see. They are 3 1/2 months old now, and pretty much blinded by fluff.

    Silkie thread!

Hello, Silkie folks! My Silkies are about 4 months old now, and it is looking like I have one cockerel and three pullets. (I know, it is hard to tell... but the cockerel is a definite.) I knew so little about Silkies when I hatched these, when I asked what the b/b/s was penciled on the egg...
