I agree... no reason I can see to breed for it . I have heard that some people have tried to breed it out and havent been successful so far . My understanding was that it came from interbreeding with polish to get the huge crests which Silkies didnt have at originally. I have found out that some...

It varies, right now i have a couple 5 month olds that look about the same size as my adults but not as filled out. That 2 month old age seems like it takes forever to get past and then all of a sudden they look like Silkies :)

Im sure you will love them just the same. I started out with Silkies I got from the county fair that were similar to what I see from hatcheries, no they didnt have the big crest but they were adorable and had the same nice personalities mine do now. I have seen a real variation in what the...

There are are a lot of colors lol! And after you get them you will want a different color too!!! I still do that! I have more blacks than other colors but love them all. This is Drucilla, one of my young black girls. While I find them easy to catch and pick up most of mine get more friendly...

Like all chickens they vary in personality but all of my silkies are easy to handle. I have a few that are under my feet all the time. I have to watch where I step lol! I have others that are friendly but go about their business more. I have found that gentle handling and feeing lots of little...

You need to either get an older chick or you can pay for genetic testing but that would get expensive if you had to test several to get a pullet. Where are you located? Maybe someone could put you in touch with someone that has one old enough to tell.

No blacks from the Partridge.... There were quite a lot of them hatched and they were all partridge. Well except that "partridge" ( white) egg I gave you lol!

Minkie and Jaz were ones that always would go in and out. Loved that. Even when I wanted them to go in early I would just call them ( and have a little scratch) and they would come running to the coop unlike some of the others I have a couple girls and one of the young boys that will stand at...

Good idea thinking of getting a Silkie! I have silkies and just got a few cochin chicks i havent put with the Silkies yet and am planning to get a few more over the weekend. I have seen quite a few people that keep these breeds together. It is really hard to tell males from female Silkies for...

I just feel so awful for you :( I cant even imagine how I would feel under the circumstances. I am a total paranoid about my night time coop and my poor husband keeps making it more secure for me. I dont know how much it will help either. Mine will get a bit anxious about things flying...

Have you figured out how whatever it was got in ??? I have never had a cat get in my coop but that seems like a lot of killing for a cat. So sad.... I hope you can see how it happened so you can keep whatever it was out
