Wow! If it wasnt for the streamers I would assume that's a hen based on the impressive crest! He is EXTREMELY handsome IMO. I had to give up a good looking roo like him a couple months ago because I already had maxed out my rooster capacity and I'm always going to miss him.
I just discovered that one of my silkies is the top hen of my bantam flock! It gave me a real kick to see her chase one of my cochins(former top hen) away from the food one morning when I was late bringing it out to them.
I
if you see a pip, they've broken te membrane. From peep to pip can be as long as 72 hours and pip to zip up to 48(from experience and following hatch-alongs). Be patient but cautious. In my experience, broodies tend to lose more fully formed chicks right before they hatch, but those that do...
You can Trim their foot feathers if you're not attached to them. I use wood shavings as bedding for their coop and run because it seems to dry up the poo and scuff it off their feet pretty well.
Thanks! She is. I lucked out with her since I bought her as a calico and as she matured, her pattern and color cleaned up into a really lovely MF on mahogany. I have a matching rooster that I just introduced her to. I won't be hatching until the spring, but I'm just itching to get started on...
I know how you feel. One of my three beautiful silkies turned out to be male, and I had to give him away. Fortunately my breeder is also a good friend, and he took the top back without any problems and will even be keeping him as a breeder because he turned out so handsome.
White silkies seem to be the hardest to sex. You're unlikely to get a definitive answer, just be aware. That said, the one you suspect of roostery looks like a pullet to me. I don't see streamers and the comb still looks pretty small with no red. Silkie pullets generally have bigger, fuller...
Any variety can be shown. You wont be able to get anything beyond best of AOV(any other variety). The birds are judged on breed standards just like all the others, but varieties are not scored.
I tried painters tape today and it wasn't strong enough. It's fine for the polish, but the silkies crests are too dense. It just pulled right back into place.
Crud... I was out in the coop cuddling the silkies and realized that one of my babies is a boy. I'm already well beyond my quote of roos and wasn't planning on breeding silkies. I've talked my breeder into taking him back but I'm sad we wont have him. :[
If anyone in the SF Bay Area wants a...
Hey y'all. I love my SQ silkies, but their vaults/crests are so huge that they have trouble seeing their surroundings, their food, and the ramp to the coop. I need to find a solution for pulling all those feathers back from their eyes that isn't going to damage them. I'm hoping some of you have...
I havent hatched shipped eggs myself, but I know that some people swear by the natural instincts of a proven broody hen when it comes to shipped eggs. There are lots of threads on here about hatching shipped eggs with bad air cells and plenty of photos of what you have there. Wish I could offer...
I paid $15-50 for show quality bearded blue and splash pullets from a reputable breeder. Take your time to look and make connections. If you are in CA I can hook up with a breeder whose stock and service I was extremely happy with. He prefers not to ship though so best if you can pick up in...
